Now that he has been elected as London mayor, Boris Johnson has given up his parliamentary seat as the MP for Henley. This move wasn't required but was probably practical, given that he will now need to devote his full attention to London and not the district he previously represented.
Boris Johnson has announced he will stand down as MP for Henley following his election as Mayor of London.
Boris Johnson will stand down as Henley MPHe was first elected for the leafy Oxfordshire seat in 2001, and Conservative sources have suggested a by-election could be held as soon as the end of this month.
Mr Johnson had always suggested during the election campaign that he would stand down from Parliament if he was successful, but the exact date of his departure was left unclear.
His resignation will widely be seen as making the Commons a less colourful place, as the shadow education spokesman was regarded as a character who livened up debates.
