Republican leaders are questioning the automatic decision to grant citizenship to those born in the USA. This practice is long tested and is a part of being an American.

The trouble that they indicate is the potential propensity for illegal’s to gain entry for the premeditated purpose of having a child so they gain citizenship and presumably set in motion the process of bringing the family along.

That is a real problem and concern.

The solution, however, is not attacking babies, but addressing the problem of illegal’s entering the country. The need is to secure the borders and police immigration so that we know exactly who is here and why, where they are, and when it is time to go. Infrastructure is in place to accomplish these things. If the capacity to do it is insufficient, then add more.

Clearly, the Mexican border is broken and needs repaired. That should be the focus and priority.

“Is the GOP shedding a birthright?

Rather than shout, I'll just ask the question in a civil way: Dear Republicans, do you really want to endanger your party's greatest political legacy by turning the 14th Amendment to our Constitution into an excuse for election-year ugliness?

Honestly, I thought that our politics could not get worse, and suddenly there appears this attack on birthright citizenship and the introduction into popular use of the hideous term "anchor babies": children whom illegal immigrants have for the alleged purpose of "anchoring" themselves to American rights and the welfare state.

Particularly depressing is that the idea of repealing the 14th Amendment's guarantee of citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States" was given momentum by one of the nation's most reasonable conservatives.

"People come here to have babies," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). "They come here to drop a child. It's called, 'drop and leave.' To have a child in America, they cross the border, they go to the emergency room, have a child, and that child's automatically an American citizen. That shouldn't be the case. That attracts people here for all the wrong reasons."”

Which party wants to fall fastest? It is hard to tell.

this would not be concern if immigration laws were enforced across the board. but ever country struggles with this same issue of what to do with illegals giving birth while illegally in country or on migrant workers on seasonal work visa.

Ah, you bring up a very good issue: should pregnant migrant workers be permitted in the country? What should be done with migrant workers who become pregnant while in the country?

Laws could be written that say if you are not a legal immigrant or in process of becoming one, then citizenship will not apply to your baby, even if born in the USA.

Would not that settle it?

It is a real problem in our country too. Israel. It is every countries responsibility to have a clear and precise policy on illegal immigration.

Yes, and in my opinion, we need a clear population growth policy to ensure that the size of the population does not outstrip resources to support it.

This opens Pandora's box because capitalism as we know it is predicated upon ever expanding population growth. That model is unacceptable.

It is a complexed problem, a vexed issue;one solution leads to another problem.Citizenship right by birth can not be done away with so easily.Even an illegal immigirant can become father of an American girlfriend's child,or mother of an American boy friend. It is not a hypothetical situation. It is happening..Some time we all know what the problem is,but a practical solution is never available dispite life long discussions. It is an issue which even coming generations won't be able to resolve. It won't cross threshold of debate and discussion and proceed towards practical solutions.Conservatives know it more than any one else. They are very well acquainted with the art of deflecting attention of the masses from real issues.
