Boyzone singer Stephen Gately dies

Irish singer Stephen Gately, member of boyband Boyzone was found dead yesterday at the age of 33 while on holiday on the Spanish Island of Majorca.

Stephen was on holiday with his long-term partner Andy Cowles, it was Andy who found him in the evening after Stephen returned home early to the hotel after some drinks in the afternoon.

Spanish police investigating his death have said they see 'no suspicious circumstances'.

The Boyzone singer Stephen Gately, 33, has been found dead while on holiday in Majorca.

The group's tour website said that he had "tragically died" and that the rest of the band would be flying out to Majorca on Sunday.

The website also said Gately had been on holiday with his long-term partner Andy Cowles when he died on Saturday.

Boyzone announced their comeback tour last November. The band had six UK number one hits between 1994 and 2000.

The News of the World's showbusiness editor Dan Wootton told Sky News Gately had gone out for drinks, returned to his accommodation and gone to sleep, but never woke up.

The Boyzone singer Stephen Gately died of natural causes, a post-mortem examination in Spain has established.

An official said he suffered pulmonary oedema, which is an accumulation of fluid on the lungs.

The 33-year-old star was found dead at his holiday home in Majorca on Saturday. The judge said his body can now be flown home.

Family lawyer Gerald Kean said papers have been signed to allow the release of his body, but added it may be two days before it is returned to Ireland.

She added that once the witness statements and tests are confirmed then the "case will be closed".

However, she could not say whether Gately had been taking any drugs or alcohol beforehand but either way, they were not the cause of death. Toxicology results are due later.

A sample of fluid taken during the post-mortem exam will also be sent to a forensic laboratory in Barcelona for further tests to confirm the result.

She declined to say whether Gately had vomited before his death.

Despite speculation, the family had denied he had taken drugs, drunk heavily or killed himself.
