As few other Latin American countries, Brazil has had an awful and failed attempt to improve or prevent the sexual exploitation of minors. Abuses against street children in Brazil were portrayed in acclaimed films; from a distance, they tell us how old and grave the problem is. Now, Internet child pornography has received the attention of Brazilian legislators. But, it is up to other political bodies to execute of such tougher measures. Let us keep our fingers crossed for them to apply the new legislation after President Lula approves it.

The law would increase from four to eight years the sentences for those found guilty of producing, publishing or receiving sexual images of minors online. The penalty was previously two to six years. Teachers and victims' relatives sentenced under the law would automatically have their prison terms increased by one-third.
Legislators in Congress passed the bill unanimously Tuesday. It has already been approved by the Senate, and now goes to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for his signature.
