SALVADOR, Brazil (AP) - Authorities say illegally set fires have consumed 50 percent of a national park in northeastern Brazil. Brazil's environmental agency says about 75,000 hectares (185,330 acres) of forest _ roughly the size of New York City _ have burned in the Chapada Diamantina national park. Nearly 500 firefighters are battling the blazes, which began in July. But park administrator Cezar Goncalves says only heavy rains can stop the flames and they are not expected until the end of the month. Authorities say the fires were likely started by ranchers clearing land for pasture. The region was once a rich source of diamonds but now thrives on ecotourism
