Despite economic progress under the administration of Lula da Silva, Brazil continues to rank among the most violent countries in the world.
BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - A study of 11 industrialized and developing nations has found that violent death is most prevalent in Brazil.
Brazil's government Institute of Applied Economic Investigations says violence was responsible for 4.7 percent of deaths registered in Brazil in 2002 and 2003. That's more than double the rate in Mexico, Argentina, India, China, Russia, Spain, Germany, Finland and the United States. South Africa, with 2.8 percent of deaths from violence, was second only to Brazil. Institute researcher Milko Maltijascic said Wednesday that «when we look at the deaths caused by intentional violence, we find the level in Brazil is practically twice that of any other country. Germany has the lowest rate of violent deaths: less than 0.1 percent.
