Is Brazil's Dilma Rousseff Cancer Back ?
Brasilia, Brazil - First Brazilian Female Elected President and cancer survivor, Dilma Rousseff inauguration will be next January 1st but rumors in Brasilia are that her cancer is back. Elected with 53% of the votes and supported by popular President Lula da Silva, Dilma is a former Marxist guerrilla that was arrested and tortured during the Military Regime ( 1964 - 1985). Now the entire country is in consternation by these rumors, that she is terribly ill and has few months of life ahead, reported by Tribuna do Nordeste, a major local newspaper.
Brazil is still traumatized by a similar event in 1985, when Tancredo Neves, first civilian elected president after the military junta, on the last day of his predecessor's term and on the eve of his own inauguration, became severely ill, requiring immediate surgery. He thus was not able to attend his own inauguration on March 15. The Constitution required the President and Vice-President elect to take oaths of office before the assembled National Congress. The inauguration was accordingly held for the Vice-President only, the Vice-President immediately assumed the powers of the presidency as Acting President. At that time, there was still hope that Neves would recover and appear before Congress to take the oath of office.
However, Neves suffered from abdominal complications and developed generalized infections. After seven operations, Neves died on April 21, more than one month after the beginning of his term of office, without ever having taken the oath of office as President.
At a press conference on April 2009, Rousseff revealed that she was undergoing treatment to remove an early-stage axillar lymphoma, a cancer in the lymphatic system, which was detected in her left armpit during a routine mammogram. It was diagnosed as a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, an intermediate grade type, but her chances of being cured were up to 90%. She was submitted to curative chemotherapy treatment for four months.
In mid-May 2009, she was hospitalized in the Hospital Sírio Libanês in São Paulo, with severe pains in her legs. The diagnosis was a myopathy, a muscle inflammation resulting from the cancer treatment. In early September that same year, she revealed she had completed her radiotherapy treatment, claiming to be cured, which was later confirmed by her doctors. She began to wear a wig due to hair loss caused by the chemotherapy.
Brazilians are apprehensive, all these rumors about Dilma's health are distressing the people, said a source from the Government that refused to be identified (AP). Officially, either the the Brazilian Government or member of Rousseff's transition team refuse to comment of rumors.
According to Folha de São Paulo, on December 23, President Lula da Silva asked during one of his speeches to Brazilians to pray for Rousseff's health.
