Breaking: New York's Governor Admits Prostitution Ring Involvement; Presser Forthcoming
Update: Who will run New York state when Spitzer clears out? Lt. Governor David A. Paterson, a Harlem resident, has already shattered some barriers for minorities and the handicapped.
From Paterson's official website: "
In 2002, David Paterson was elected minority leader of the New York
State Senate, the first non-white legislative leader in New York’s
history. In 2004 in Boston, he became the first visually impaired
person to address a Democratic National Convention. And 2006 saw Mr.
Paterson make history again by being elected New York’s first
African-American lieutenant governor. "
Lt. Governor Paterson, who is legally blind, is also nationally
recognized as a leading advocate for the visually and physically
impaired. A graduate of Columbia University and Hofstra Law School, Mr.
Paterson also currently serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia’s
School for International and Public Affairs. David Paterson lives in
Harlem with his wife, Michelle, and their two children, Ashley and
Alex, and he is the son of Basil Paterson, the first non-white
secretary of state of New York and the first African-American
vice-chair of the national Democratic Party."
Update: Spitzer said "I sought to bring real change to New York." Citing what he called "nine years" of dedication to "progressive politics," Spitzer said that he apologized to his family, and to the public, "who I promised better."
"I have disappointed and failed to live up to..." standards and promises, Spitzer said, acknowledging that his actions, which he did not name, violated "any sense of right or wong." He said, however, that politics is about "ideas, not individuals."
The irony: Spitzer, who presented himself as a poster boy for battling corruption, and was once touted as a possible vice-presidential candidate for Wesley Clark, now may be remembered as "#9" in an indictment for prostitution. When he was inaugurated, Spitzer said "Some public officials may not want to face stricter ethics rules..."
New York state government right now is at a halt, with confusion reigning. No one quite knows who's in charge or for how long. Whether or not David Patterson has taken the oath of office, or if official papers are being circulated, is a mystery.
A major question: why did Spitzer not make a clean break with a resignation and then a statement? No one yet knows, but the fallout is only beginning.
Still coming: effects on tomorrow's Mississippi primary. With Barack Obama and HIllary Clinton duking it out, the ripple effect of a liberal governor who campaigned on a platform of change is yet to be seen.
Update: In a stunning blow to Democrats, liberals, and his supporters, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer allegedly resigned his post today as a growing sex scandal bulldozed New York state and Democratic politics.
Spitzer spoke for only a few seconds, in a press conference so short that most news media couldn't get linked in. He apologized to his family and others, but did not address the issue of the prostitution allegations, nor other allegations.
In this confusing, multi-tentacled ethics mess, even Spitzer's resignation is creating chaos. He did not state his resignation in his terse statement, but speculation is that he submitted his resignation in writing.
Spitzer's cellphone records appaerntly were the factor that tripped him up. A federal indictment in the Southern District of New York that names Spitzer has been unsealed and is making its way to the media.
Other black eyes for the "tough on crime" former prosecution: an investigation into his alleged use of state troopers to bully and track political opponents. Some are referring to the "dark underside" of the supposedly squeaky-clean, family values, corruption-fighting politician.
Update: as we wait for Spitzer's press coference, here's a quote from Spitzer, who ran his entire political campaign as a "law and order," anti-corruption guy.
""Faith...faith affects every decision we make. The values we bring to
what we do, our notion that integrity should guide the marketplace, how
we deal with outher people, our definition of what government stands
for."
Update: reports are circulating that Spitzer had learned he was to be indicted for a criminal act in involving using a prostitute. Ironically, this former prosecutor now will negotiate with prosecutors, if indicted, to avoid jail time on felony charges.
Who takes over? The contrast couldn't be greater. Spitzer is the son of upper NY weath. The new governor, David Paterson, is an African-American of humble origins. He's also legally blind.
Update: Spitzer is expected to resign. Ironically, in 2005 Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico called Spitzer "the future of the Democratic party."
Update: Here's a profile of Spitzer from USliberals.
The high-level prostitution ring being named charged up to $5,000 an hour. Fox News reports that Spitzer may be the "client #9" named in court documents.
Update: there may be links to the Emperor's Club prostitution ring. Spitzer has also been under fire for alleged campaign contribution irregularities. The Democrat politician is married and has three children.
Original post follows. (Note: the highlight didn't come through, but I'm working rapidly.)
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has informed aides he will hold a press conference today admitting his links to a prostitution ring.

PEP, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.
Thanks for the flag, Rachel.
My roots go deep into the Catskills and surrounding areas--with the Euro side of my family since the late 1600's (we started out helping to found Boston). I grew up with NY politics as a main dish in my family. I still miss NY, think about moving back, and I do keep an eye on things there.
Join me in singing a chorus of the original "We're REady for Teddy Again." Yea, I'm a Teddy Roosevelt fan. He'd kick Spitzer's backside.
OOOOOH and one more tidbit for you PEP, Dollars to Donuts, This Sodomizer Bunny is going to play the Religious Card to the media full of I repent and found Jaysus.
PEP ~ Spitzer's days are over. . . .
I live near Albany,N.Y. . . . Mary & I will meet you at Albany Airport this summer and help you with your new location - Ray Seedplanter.(raymonty@lycos.com)de la Montagne.
Looking forward to getting some interesting news here as this breaks
Hi, are you in the area? If so, how are things there?
No ment news on this article on nowpublic. :)
are you having trouble with the highlight tool? there is no text in your selection.
Yes, thanks, Ryan. The highlight tool opened the normal work window. Then it closed and the NP system hung up. I tried again, I saw text there, and then it appeared as you see it. I have a note with the updates. As a side note, did you notice that recently the system is running very slowly? Cheers!
Hmmm... and I thought my computer was buggy when things didn't work for me yesterday. Mayhap it was the site.
As for Germaine commentary, thanks for the story. Just skimmed it right now but am looking forward to things developing as the day proceeds. What is it about power and authority that makes ypocrits and scumbags out of people?
big news for sure
It has just been announced that Eliot Spitzer will be resigning.
He is being endicted by southern district of NY.
Thanks for your input, ojt.
That was a very interesting statement Spitzer just made - as much for what he left out as what he said: no direct reference to the New York Times story, and no direct reference to whether he would be stepping down or not, except for saying that he planned to spend some time regaining the trust of his family. What do others make of his statement?
He's shocked that he couldn't get around it, and he's weaseling.
Now there's speculation he may or may not have resigned, and may be trying to save his job.
Great story and you got to us fast for sure! Thanks PEP!
Another politician-prostitution link - will they ever end?
That was rhetorical.
I figure that because of the enormous amount of hours that politicians work - they all have bad marriages - therefore male spouses end up with prostitutes.
C'mon suffragettes - you disagree? ;)

Hi Swan! Thanks for the flag and comments.
Nah. I figure that it's a power-arrogance thing. "I'm so important" that "I am above the law" and "I deserve this."
I've been around a lot of successful politicans. The males seem to have intense power drives, and paired with them: arrogance and intense sexual drives.
Apparently he was a diddlin with the ladies before he became a politican when he was an AG, of course his wife a Harvard Grad must be thrilled, one wonders if she and Hillary will form a support group, since they have had similar marriages or better yet, she become Hillarys VP if Hillary wins the election. One can only guess as Swan puts it, implelmenting a Supreme Court ruling allowing Bobbitt 101 Law for all married guys nuts enough to dip their wick where they are not supposed to.
Great work PEP.
Thanks, Vince. Hope everything went OK for you in the big storm.
PEP, I like this story. It's good stuff. It will be interesting as it progresses.
Thanks, AlvarezGalloso. This is one heckuva mess, isn't it?
Given his self-righteous tone and actions, he is going to get piled on. Wall Street may throw a party.
Apparently, the emperor has no clothes. Sorry, couldn't resist it!
i am curious what the New York Post's headline will be in the morning. i am thinking something like:
"Eliot Spritzed Her!"
and the domain name is still available: ELIOTSPRITZEDHER.COM is available!
what do you think?
I was wrong.....it was, "Ho No!"
We all know what blowwinsky means and if you don't know ask your daughter.
Don Imus gave us white people, "HO,HO" and we have to live with it just like Clinton got a blowinsky.
Now, "spitzer"
mtippett, thanks for the video. awesome!
I'm so tired of seeing politicians' wives dragged in to stand beside them when they confess to awful things.
Agreed. I'm not sure I'd be so amenable.
Hey all,
Hey Rachel, you and I could attend the Bobbit 101 for Wives course together! ;)
~ Swan
I'm fairly sure I wouldn't be amenable at all.
Ya know, "stand by your man" has its limits. Given that she doesn't have to worry about money for her children (they're rich, she's also a successful attorney), I'm not sure why she showed up. Was it personal commitment or the complex intricacies of political marriages?
The theme song for politics, I'm convinced is "Harper Valley PTA." ;}
