In the ongoing battle between LTTE and Srilankan Government  in Srilanka's north , wanni -More than 2,000 civilians feared slaughtered in a single night

More news from Tamilnet follows.

Indiscriminate barrage of shelling by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on the 'safety zone' starting from Saturday night to Sunday morning slaughtered more than 2,000 civilians including large number of women and children, medical sources in Vanni said quoting the injured who managed to reach the makeshift hospital. Dead bodies are scattered everywhere and 814 wounded managed to reach the makeshift hospital up to 9:25 a.m., doctors said. Every kind of lethal weapon such as the internationally banned cluster shells and shells fired from Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers and Cannons were used turning the so-called safety zone into a killing field. The SLA usually chooses weekends for its massacres to minimise international attention.

The entire family of a devoted nursing officer, Gracian Tharmarasa, has been wiped out in the shelling.

Dead bodies are found in bunkers and inside the tarpaulin tents.

The exact number of the killed and injured is yet to be ascertained.

257 dead bodies, including 67 that of children, have been brought to the hospital.

112 of the injured brought to the hospital were children.

The makeshift hospital which is now running in junior school in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal is struggling beyond words to cope with the situation, the medical sources said.

"This is the first time in history where the International Community and the UN have politically experimented such a mass killing of civilians in a single day by giving an almost open consent to a government," described a human rights professional in Colombo upon hearing the news.

The large scale slaughter is believed to be a result of India prodding Colombo to finish the war before the change of government, political circles in Colombo said adding that it seems that the 'war on terror' has been translated into 'war on civilians' in the time of Obama Administration.

Update - 1

1200 bodies counted, hundreds seriously injured, aerial bombing continues

Rescue workers within the Mullaiththeevu Safety Zone have counted more than 1200 bodies after the large scale slaughter Saturday night and Sunday morning by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) with the use of cluster ammunition, multi-barrel rocket launchers and cannons, sources from Vanni said. The workers fear that there may be additional bodies yet to be uncovered, and the numbers killed will likely rise. Rescue workers also said several hundreds were very seriously injured, and the critical shortage of medicine at the makeshift hospital in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal will lead to many more deaths. Meanwhile, Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal Hospital staff said, until 3:00 p.m. the number of bodies brought to the hospital was 378, injured totaled 1122. The staffers added that 106 of the dead, and 251 of the injured were children.

Update - 2

SLA continues to inflict carnage

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has stepped up relentless barrage of shelling using all sorts of heavy weapons on the so-called safety-zone (no-fire zone) in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal and Vadduvaakal areas where more than 130,000 civilians have sought refuge without adequate bunkers and shelters. Civilian casualties are mounting amidst lack of medicine and food due to limited or denied supplies into the area of 7 square kilometres. Lawrence Christy, the head of Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) Field Office on Monday put the death toll of civilians on Monday at more than 3,200 killed since Sunday evening up to Monday morning. He has called on the IC to immediately invoke the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) to the stop the genocide.

Can someone put an end to this Sri Lankan State Terrorists?
7000 killed in 4 months. 13000 wounded brought to hospitals by ICRC.
2000 killed in a single night! If this is not genocide what is it then?
Coward Sri lankan army. The best in the world in killing civilians!

In jan 2009. The defense intelligence said:"There are 1300 LTTE's". The army deployed 50.000 troops to kill 1300 rebels. And according to gov registration 70.000 civilians inside.

May 2009:
9000 civilians killed

13000 wounded civilians. (Evidence ICRC's registration)

Over 200.000 civilians escaped the "Safe-Zone"! How about the governments registration and intelligence?  70.000 and 200.000?

I think the government wanted to wipe out 130.000 civilians just to kill 1300 LTTE. Which reminds of an earlier comment "Sri Lankan army kills 100 civilians to get 1 LTTE"

The propaganda has swelled from 250 to 2000 killed, the actual ofical figures are 125 dead.1000 injured/. That its now an urban warfare event and no shelling. I really wonder what the true story is as no news media is allowed in the war zone. .

Simple, Babel-Fish. More bodies, more money. The amount contribution / donation / extortion guilt money to be given by the 'diasporans' is directly proportional to the number of dead civilian's photos viewed by them.

30 silver coins are old story.

"the actual official figures are 125 dead.1000 injured"

125 dead and 1000 injured is not bad? And how officials are they? The same official report that stated only 70.000 civilians were living in the warzone in Jan 09?

It is actually bad for LTTE's fund collectors. With this numbers they can't achieve the fixed target that needed to hire "professionals" to create media sensation that can somehow extend the final clean-up operation of SLA and hence the end of "fat man".

It's easy to blame the faraway UN, the US and India.  How about regarding what Prabakharan has done?  He is just as guilty as the S/L Army.

That does not apply. Whatever that low life thug doing is all good for "Dumeel". "Dumeel" pride is over and above the lives of civilians getting killed by LTTE. It is ok for LTTE to fire at troops from the guns installed among civilians because they know that the retaliatory fire will kill civilians. Then the terrorists can use the photos of the dead bodies to beg more money from the west.

Piraphagharan is a "dumeel". So whatever he does is right as always. Anything is for "Dumeel eelam"

LOL..!!

Again shelling started by 6 PM ..

Heavy shelling resumed again at 6 PM while people still mourning the death of their kith and kin and couldn't come out from the agony, said Tamil National Reporter speaking at 9 PM on Sunday. According to latest report more than 50 killed and many others injured within few hours. Many civilian settlements and vehicles were burning.

Fearing the repetition of last night's gory attack, people are displacing towards interior areas and roads are congested with moving people and vehicle.
According to hospital sources,  due to huge number of injured civilians brought to hospital, the hospital is unable to give the services to all patients. Many wounded civilians are without treatment for more than 24 hours now. And more than half of the health staff were affected in yesterday night's attack in one way or other and only half of the available staff have reported for work. The doctors have sought the help of volunteers to attend to some of the work.    Our Reporter said they fear for the massive slaughter to continue tonight also, if international community does not take any action as a matter of urgency.

Right after Sri Lankan Army Commander Sarath Fonseka visited Vanni, the fighting has intensified. The GOSL has given the green light to the the Sri Lankan forces to kill all rebels at "any cost".

Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was in Vanni to discuss on ground situation

Its more painful the deaths for all tamils. But people like "agent" and somany other people those who well paid the srilankan government makes us much higher pain.

Please everybody , at least don't say your condolences , but stop kidding us.

We world tamils , behind LTTE , our leader is Pirabharkan.

99 percent Norway Tamils aspire for Tamil Eelam [TamilNet, Monday, 11 May 2009, 10:51 GMT]
In a secret ballot of universal suffrage, conducted by a Norwegian media simultaneously in 14 centres in the length and breath of the country among Eezham Tamils, 98.95 percent of the voters said that they aspire for the formation of an independent and sovereign Tamil Eelam in the North and East of the island of Sri Lanka. The voter turn out was a high 89.8 percent in the capital city of Oslo and an average 80 percent for the country, Utrop biweekly that conducted the ballot said. The ballot gains significance not only in democratically and concretely revealing what the Tamils want, but also in telling that the so-called Oslo Declaration that speaks about internal self-determination is not up to their expectations, Tamil circles said. A couple of days before the ballot, Norwegian Minister Erik Solheim advocated a federal solution to the crisis.

While you feel pain over the death of only tamils, Ranganathan21, we all feel pain over the death of every human being in that country. That is the difference between you and us. What we write here may sould like kidding and making fun to you, but that is not true.

We just mock the hypocracy of the LTTE supporters who always shout from the rooftops to stop SLA and other meaningless things like genocide and pesticide. But ever they say a word to LTTE to release the civilian hostages? No. Why not?

"...We world tamils , behind LTTE , our leader is Pirabharkan."

Not world tamils, Ranganathan. Only some hallucinated mindless souls support Piraphaagharan. Oh, there is a serious error in your arrangement of words.

"...We LTTEs , behind tamil civilian hostages, our leader is Piraphakaran. "
