Sri Lankan rebels Tamil Tiger have called a ceasefire, but the The Sri Lankan government defence minister called the ceasefire 'a joke' according to the BBC.

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels have declared a unilateral ceasefire amid growing international concerns for thousands of civilians trapped in fighting.

The Sri Lanka military has pushed deep into the rebel strongholds in the north in recent months, surrounding them in a tiny area and vowing to end the quarter-century war.

Surrounded, the rebels are accused of using civilians trapped in the fighting as human shields.

A Tamil Tiger spokesman told the BBC the move was due to what he called an "unprecedented humanitarian crisis".

The Sri Lankan defence minister told the BBC he dismissed the announcement, calling it a joke.

The rebels are surrounded by troops in a 12 sq km (5 sq m) area. The UN says more than 160,000 civilians have fled the area but 50,000 remain.

The rebels said the move was also in response to "the calls made by the UN, EU, the governments of India and others".

I do not belive Tigers but in every case civilians relief must get the Utmost priority, in the other way when all the civilians are rescued then.... this will be the end of prabhakarn!!

  • Do Ltte (Prabhakaran) want to give up his life?    I say No

Posibilities

  1. may be he (Piraiaaharan) is now off the country?
  2. Ltte has got no more weapons
  3. Ltte has got no more fighters
  4. ltte want to take some more Hostages as their Protect shield
  5. ltte want to win time and hope to save own life with a miracle

In every case Civilians need a relief badly and now everyone who asked for a ceasefire has to come out with reliefs!!

How can they, when they are on the verge of victory. You have to defeat them or get routed, killed, enslaved or be on the run rest of your lives.

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Sri Lankan Government said that nothing but a total surrender will do.

Ceasefire for WHAT? So the LTTE could recuperate and commence their usual rounds of butchery, AGAIN? For heavens sake, this is the satanic force which used to roam the fields, attacking villages, slashing the abdomens of pregnant women, shooting infants and massacring devotees inside holy places.

This is the barbaric troupe which has taken their brethren as hostages and fired indiscriminately at those who tried to escape.

A ceasefire would ONLY allow these scourges to live through the day to die another day. A ceasefire, in any conceivable way would not benefit the hostages in their custody, i.e the ordinary Tamil folk.

One must be an absolute harebrained to even to think of a ceasefire, let alone advocating one.

There have been many calls for ceasefire from many countries, Tamils Diaspora and LTTE; also requests were made to allow media in and to let foreign aid in.

The main message has been all along Tamils' rights and freedom in Sri Lanka can not be delivered all-military solution.

Many countries have suggested power-sharing or hinting towards Tamil Eelam as the solution for Tamils.

US called for ceasefire and encouraged a political solution, said military

German called for ceasefire and encouraged a political solution.

UK called for ceasefire and encouraged a political solution.

Australia called for ceasefire and encouraged a political solution.

Germany calls for Ceasefire between GoSL, LTTE [TamilNet, Friday, 23 January 2009, 01:51 GMT]
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called Thursday for an immediately negotiated ceasefire between the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE), stating that the ceasefire should enable aid deliveries and medical care for the civilians in the disputed areas.

Steinmeier expressed concern for more than 300,000 refugees on a coastal 30-kilometer strip of land, in the area held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), DPA News Agency reported Thursday.

Steinmeier also called for the conflicting parties to urgently come to a political agreement. "The conflict won't be solved by military means alone," he said.

Even India, who is aiding behind scenes to Sri Lankan Army with chemical wepaons and troops, for the record called for a ceasefire and encouraged a political solution.

South India majority people and former Chief minister has acknowledged Tamil Eelam would be the solution Tamils in Sri Lanka.

South Africa ruling ANC party has supported Tamil Eelam for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

However the Sri Lankan Government has decided to deliver an all-military solution to Tamils' aspiration to live freely in Tamil regions, to LTTE, and to all countries requested ceasefire & political solution; and the military solution is orhestrated under the heavy veil of media and denial of access to aid agencies.

Okies. Ask the US to declare a ceasefire against Taliban. Get their responses and thereafter this could be deliberated further.

"South India majority people and former Chief minister has acknowledged Tamil Eelam would be the solution Tamils in Sri Lanka.

South Africa ruling ANC party has supported Tamil Eelam for Tamils in Sri Lanka."

Hilarious at best. May be they would provide you all with one, who knows.

It is hard to hide a 61 years of oppression of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Many countries understand that, including US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia and many others.

If you are trying say if all these countries are wrong, then you got a bigger problem than the Sri Lankan Government itself.

Military end to conflict will end hope for a unified Sri Lanka - Obama White House

[TamilNet, Saturday, 25 April 2009, 12:02 GMT]
In a statement issued Friday the Obama White House called on "both sides to stop fighting immediately," and "the Government of Sri Lanka to stop shelling the safe zone and blocking international aid groups and media from accessing those civilians who have managed to escape," adding both sides should "strictly adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law," and that the Obama administration is "very concerned about reports of violations, and take these allegations very seriously." The White House cautioned that, "[i]t would compound the current tragedy if the military end of the conflict only breeds further enmity and ends hopes for reconciliation and a unified Sri Lanka in the future."

LTTE has been fighting for the freedom and rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Ofcourse, there has been violence used in the fighting. How else would you fight a state terrorism of 60 years?

LTTE has been a rebel force and stands for Tamil Nationalism in Sri Lanka.

That's what the Sri Lankan Government and Sinhalese Extremists are so angry about Prabhaharana and LTTE.

LTTE is freedom fighters for Tamils. Destroying them without delivering a political solution to Tamils will only keep the bloodbath going in Sri Lanka.

@ Tamiya

Yes you are correct, all the world leaders asked for ceasefire! this was to enable civilians to get releas from the ltte terror and to rescue them from the clutches of tiger terrorists. And the result of such a ceasefire and rescuing civilians also would have enable to put an end to Vezzhu Pizzhai Piranharan in no time. There for dicleared Sri Lanka 2 times ceasefire and ltte did not give any possitive respond.

3
Tamiya

There was no ceasefire.

The Sri Lankan government unilaterely declared a 48 hour ceasefire, kept on shelling and shooting. No media allowed, No foreign aid agencies allowed, no food allowed inside the "safety zone", no medicines allowed into the "safety zone"

You call that a ceasefire?!! Self-serving ceasefire would not help anything here. An international monitored and permanant ceasefire, and a long-term solution to Tamils are absolutely needed in Sri Lanka if anybody interested in long-term peace.

Futher oppression and human rights violations will only provoke already maxed out humanitarian activists, jouranlists, human rights watch and western countries.

Do not be surprised if the western countries say enough is enough and starts to recognize Tamil Eelam, just one by one. They all hinted towards it.

In the latest statment US -Obama White House said "Military end to conflict will end hope for a unified Sri Lanka"

@Tamiya

"  There was no ceasefire."

This is only your opinion! and as I see you only doing a Propaganda work to Ltte and I must say you have got Skill! Skill to forge and publish. Or shall I ask "How do you know"?
