Reporting from Dhaka - A moderate (5.6 on the Richter scale) earthquake recently hit Dhaka (the capital city of Bangladesh) a little more than 3 hours ago (at 12:52 am local time) as reported by The Daily Star.

I can actually confirm this through first hand experience. A few hours ago I was startled by what, at first, I thought to be someone shaking my chair. I then realized that everything was shaking. The whole incident lasted less than a minute.

I decided to hastily jot down when this happened on - of all places - on my Twitter account (the first time Twitter is used to tweet a tremor in real-time?). Confirmation of the tremor from local news sources than come three hours later.

More information as it becomes available.

Some extra information:

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake was centred 115 kilometres (70 miles) north of the capital Dhaka at a depth of 5.2 kilometres and struck at 12:51 am (1851 GMT Saturday).

There were no reports of any damage or casualties, but the tremor was felt in Dhaka and a police spokesman in Mymensingh, the district nearest the epicentre, told AFP it sparked panic there.
