Bristol Palin, 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior McCain aide confirms

Palin confirms daughter's pregnancy

The Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has announced that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

The Palins asked the news media to respect the young couple's privacy.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the statement concluded.

Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

McCain officials said the news of the daughter's pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called "mud-slinging and lies" circulating on liberal blog sites.

Where are all the Kos Democrats now?

Ever since John McCain announced his VP pick, the Daily Kos — the self-declared “New Center” of American politics — has been an out-of-control incubator of deranged conspiracy theories and attacks on GOP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s family. Will a single Kos Democrat stand up publicly and specifically denounce the madness on the left side of the Internet? Or do they agree with the Kos smear merchants that monitoring Palin family pregnancies and jeering about 17-year-old Bristol’s situtation — as Kos himself does here in this post now featured on the front page of the site — is “fair game?

Sarah and Todd Palin's Statement ot the Press

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Obama's Statement to Supporter's

"Let me be a clear as possible:  I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people's families are off limits," Obama said, "and people's children are especially off limits.

"This shouldn't be part of our politics," he continued, "It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.

"And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories," he said. "You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and, you know, teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off limits."

Well no matter, with Palin coming out publicly supporting her daughter and the baby's father, no one will do time, unless of course it is found out that Palin is a liar. She's already under ethics violations investigations, even the Palin supporters can't deny that one, nor can it be chocked up to Liberal bloggers etc, who are bent on smearing the potential, or should I say used to be potential VP choice.

I honestly think she'll feel that the heat is getting way too hot and will pull a Hariet Meirs and withdraw.

I think any Obama supporter would do well to concider his dealings with Ayers who Bombed the Pentagon and other government structures and Tony Rezko who helpped him purchase property and is involved in raising money for him, before we get into the Palin investigations.  An investigation is not guilt.  One must be go to trial and be convicted, anything else is speculation.

One other thing.  Palin was the governor of Alaska, a state that if it was cut in half would make Texas the third largest state.  A state that is 1/5 the size of the lower 48.  What did Obama have exec experince over?

Bull crap. Alaska holds 685.000 people. Obama was elected by 3.500.000 people. in 2004. In this case geographical size does not matter, but pop. size does.

Their local careers:

1. Obama was chosen by 50.000 people. Had a squeeky clean career in Illinois

2. Wassilla holds 7000 ppl now, 5000 when she was chosen. Palin abused her power to fire some police captain then, too!

Her lack of experience is way more severe than his. And I'll give you that she has executive experience, all 18 months of it. And being governor of Alaska, a state with billions to spend, it's not exactly hard.

The only reason the baby's father is not in trouble is because the age of consent law in Alaska is 16.  In states where the age is 18, a man can be prosecuted no matter what the opinion of the girl or her parents.  This virtually never happens except in the case where the girl becomes pregnant.  I know this because an 18 year old cousin of mine did time for getting his 16 year old girlfriend pregnant, even though neither her nor her parents objected and they have remained together for years afterward.  When a law is broken it is up to the DA to decide whether or not to prosecute.

To heck with the daughter, let them work it out.

Explain why momma is lying about the "Bridge to Nowhere" straight out of the starting gate with McCain.

politisite, I like this story. It's good stuff. I wonder how much the McCain's can contribute to the Palin domestic fund? At least this will show up the GOP on abstinence, well sort of; kind of doubt that...

Well, abstinece is appropriate for school education.  The main responcibility is at home. Many families in America can relate to what has happened.  You teach the best way you can, the outcomes are not always what we wish.  The bottom line is that she is taking reponcibility for her child.

Best wishes to the daughter. Her life will be tougher, but it's not like all is lost. In fact, she might learn much about life first hand which many people have to make assumptions about otherwise.

This site contains incriminating evidence that suggests that Bristol is the mother. It includes captions with her boyfriend's sister holding the baby, etc.

All I can say is that perhaps her mother failed on teaching the abstinence thing.  An even larger issue for me would be the mother's actions in regards to her own presumed delivery.

If Governor Palin experienced rupture of her membranes at eight months gestation of a known Down's Syndrome fetus, and then she proceeded to get on an airplane, and fly home to Alaska, and it has been reported that the flight was eight to ten hours long, instead of going to the nearest great hospital in Dallas, Texas with a high-risk neonatal unit, then she lacks the judgement to be VP.  Nothing should have been more important than to take those steps.  I have been involved in at least 1,500 deliveries in way of administration of anesthetics and the number one thing we know about ruptured membranes is that they present an acute danger for the mother and the fetus.  Infection could be fatal for both, and it necessitates the mother getting to the hospital as soon as possible and being placed on IV antibiotics for her safety and for the safety of the fetus.

Additionally, the pregnancy was high-risk due to her age and due to the fact that the fetus was known to suffer from Down's Syndrome.  Those children often have other problems such as heart defects and other things which may not appear until delivery, and often they require intensive care.  During that flight, neither Governor Palin's condition, nor that of the fetus was being monitored and the conditions were anything but clean or sterile.  Oxygen on airplanes is at 19%, room air is 21%, and often laboring mothers, particularly those with high-risk situations are supplemented with much higher oxygen levels. That endangered her and the fetus.  The other thing is that all premature infants now receive special steroids via IV infusion in the mother in order to assist their lungs in rapidly progressing prior to delivery.  The longer those steroids can be given to the fetus before delivery, the greater potential for assistance in lung maturity.

No one would have started care to Governor Palin, and in fact she and her staff have reiterated the story and said that she only spoke with her physician in Alaska, that she did not seek care in Dallas and did not receive any prior to getting on that plane.  No reputable physician would have given permission for that to anyone.  The physician in question is now missing in action and cannot be located, but Governor Palin is known to have appointed the physician to many influential and lucrative boards and positions.

For me, the pregnancy of her daughter is disturbing because Palin held herself out to be the perfect, God-fearing, all-knowing mother who was perfect, yet her own daughter did not follow the standards which Governor Palin wants to impose, by law, on the entire country, such as teaching abstinence only and no sex education or education on birth control.  If she failed in being able to instill that belief in her own daughter, she was not fulfilling her duty as a mother, and as a leader for the community.  Then, if her delivery took place as Governor Palin herself has given in interviews, then I do not want anyone who showed such superb incompetence and such failure in making a decision involving her own health and that of her infant, to be in a position where she would be making decisions which could effect my welfare and that of the country and the world.  Her behavior was reckless, negligent, and too far over the top to even be imagined, but she, the great pro-lifer endangered her own infant.  Extremely poor judgement and I don't want her making decisions which effect my life or that of my family.

The previous poster, Brenda, has said everything --and much more eloquently--that I would have and I thank her for this. No one who has delivered a child, let alone four, and has either a modicum of judgment or concern for her unborn child would have behaved as Palin did. She phrased the more commonly stated 'having my water break' as 'amniotic leakage' which anyone who has had children knows is the same thing and a sign to get to a hospital immediately to ensure a safe delivery--especially with a pre-term, compromised infant. The importance of this would have been stressed to any prospective mother, let alone someone in Palin's position.

If the GOP was so disgusted by Clinton's twisting terminology in his personal scandal, in this case twisted terminology is being used to diminish an unbelievable lack of regard for an unborn infant's safety. Given how Palin has used her decision to continue this pregnancy as an example to potential voters of her commitment to a 'pro-life' position, it's hypocritical as well as a demonstration of her willingness to place her own needs for the spotlight above very serious needs of her own child. This goes way beyond poor judgment.

Although I think it's appropriate that the privacy of  family members is protected, Palin's own comments regarding her behavior are independent of her family. These amply demonstrate her narcissism and unsuitability as a VP who will truly be a 'heartbeat' from the presidency, so I hope the GOP is not able to suppress them from reaching the general public. McCain might not have understood the significance of what Palin said she did, but most women who have had children will understand the implications immediately. Right now the last thing the US needs in government is another self-serving narcissist with poor judgment.

Teenagers in the US are being charged and labeled sex offenders for having consensual sex with their teenage partners. Their parents are also charged and labeled as sex offenders. This is breaking up families, people are losing their jobs, homes(due to the registry & residency restrictions),their lives are being ruined!

This sends a terrible message!!!

Read 'Ricky's Life' online please.

The real issue here is McCain's lack of judgment in this impulsive decision to select Sara Palin, virtually unvetted. Pandering is a pattern of Mr. McCain, inspite of his claims to be a 'maverick'. Do your own research; McCain's political career began as a Naval Liason - the equivalent of a lobbyiest for the procurement of defense hardware. His civilian Congressional career began from the help of the liquor industry (Cindy's family) in Arizona, where he repaid the favor by greasing the skids for the Hensley family. It goes on and on, most notably with the Keating Five where he was so far over the edge that he had to admit that he was one of the bad guys. Imagine how guilty a Republican has to be to actually admit his guilt? This is the kind of Presidency we could expect from McCain: impulsive and politically driven, not "country first", but McCain first, Republican first. We've had enough of that from Bush and we will pass that legacy along to our children to repair because it won't get done in our life times.

Man, bummer for that dude sentenced to 10 years for a consensual oral sex with a minor.  He should have come to Alaska. Wonder what he's thinking now, as the privileged white kid plays hockey for Wasila High School and gets ready to marry the governor's daughter?
