Britain relaxes restrictions on travel to Sri Lanka

(IANS)

The British government has relaxed travel restrictions on its citizens visiting Sri Lanka nearly five weeks after Tamil separatist rebels were defeated to end a more then 30-year war in the South Asian country, the British high commission in Colombo said Friday.

Britain, which had imposed restrictions for its citizens to some of the popular tourist destinations on the southern and eastern coasts of the country, said in a statement that it would no longer discourage British people from visiting those areas.

'I am pleased to announce that we have relaxed the restrictions on travel suggested in the advice we give to British visitors coming to Sri Lanka,' British High Commissioner Peter Hayes said.

Britain would no longer discourage British holidaymakers from going leopard spotting at Yala National Park in southern Sri Lanka, surfing at Arugam Bay in eastern Sri Lanka or visiting Trincomalee harbour in northeastern Sri Lanka, one of the world's deepest natural ports, Hayes said.

This is a welcome piece of news, especially after the Americans issued a travel advisory on Sri Lanka.

On analysis, it has been found that the USA issued the advisory on the advice of the US Embassy in Colombo. There are a few reasons as to why Colombo advised Washington about the security situation of Sri Lanka which is still too early to be discussed.

Presently, there are about 350 tourists in Arugam Bay alone, attending the Surfing Championships. 46 foreigners and 16 Sri Lankans are taking part in this competition.

It is hoped that all countries will relax travel restrictions on Sri Lanka as it is much safer now after the LTTE was thoroughly defeated by the Sri Lankan troops.  USA stated that there are some LTTe terrorists are still roaming around the country and may pose a threat.

However, on the same token, it should be stated that Sri Lanka is comparatively safer than most countries which are fighting terrorism at the moment, including the Philippines.

People who have HUMANITY should not visit Sri Lanaka,

Shelling is over but the killings continue. Sri Lankan government hasn't finished with the Tamils. Every Tamil man, woman and child is considered as a suspect. Under the emergency rules, Sri Lankan forces have the right to arrest or kill anybody they consider as a suspect. Living as a Tamil in Sri Lanka is like walking on a thin rope above a deep valley that is filled with deadly snakes.

Then, for sure, the remnants of the LTTE Terrorists who fled abroad and their diasporan supporters there will visit Sri Lanka. That's scary :-)

This article seems to be false (propaganda?) as it completely contradicts the UK governments own website which says that travel warnings are reissued with travel wanings to the East added.

Updated: 02 July 2009

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to throughout. We continue to advise against all travel to the north of Sri Lanka but now advise against all but essential travel to most parts of eastern Sri Lanka (see below).

A more accurate nowpublic post also exists which is in line with the facts on the UK government website.
