British death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan hits 300
Two Royal Marines have been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan, while on a routine joint patrol with local Afghan forces in Helmand province. The deaths bring the British death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan to 300. 155 British military personel have been killed in Iraq.
Two Royal Marines have been killed by an explosion during a routine patrol in Afghanistan, taking the total number of British personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq to 300.
The pair were travelling with Afghan forces in the Garmsir area of southern Helmand Province when the blast went off just before 5pm local time on Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear whether it was a roadside bomb or a landmine, the Ministry of Defence said.
The death of the two Marines, who were serving with the UK Landing Force Command Support Group, takes the number of British military deaths in Afghanistan since 2001 to 124.
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a 24 hour period of grace before any more information is released.
