NEWPORT NEWS --  A British immigrant in the U.S. for 25 years is facing deportation.

Daniel Bowman sits in jail for what he calls a bad mistake he made in May 1994, when he, at age 20, and another man stole a car radio from a woman in Newport News.

He pleaded guilty, served five years probation, and has not been in trouble since.

But his past came back to haunt the 35-year-old on July 30, when he tried to renew his green card. After an hour wait, an officer took him away in handcuffs.

"I just couldn't believe it. I thought okay, maybe they're just trying to shake me up, maybe there is a mix-up in the paperwork," he first thought. “He said I was convicted of a felony in 1994, which is grounds for deportation.”

Bowman was seven in 1980 when he came here from Liverpool, England. His son is six years old and he says he has a hard time explaining why he's behind bars.

Now, he waits for immigration officials to decide what will happen next.

This seems a little extreme in my opinion - I think he has served his time ok by now!

I agree 110% this really gets my goat!  What is wrong with the US Government?  This has been so long ago I think they bumped their heads.  They showed his little boy on the news it broke my heart. The child said he didn't know when he was going to see his daddy again.  OMG I thought I would lose it.  This guy is here not far from where I live just over the Chesapeake Bay. Why is this now coming to light, he's been in jail for a while.  The amount of time  the public doesn't really know. There are too many questions here if you ask me.

That is so strange because doesn't the government have enough to worry about? Why are they bothering with this man again? Someone has a weird vendetta out on this one I think...

It doesn't make any since after all this time.  Yes, I think the same thing someone has it out for him but for what?  He hasn't done anything that any of his family or friends can think of.  You'd think with all of the Human Sex Trafficking, Missing Children, Missing Adults, Murderers, Child Molesters, Drug Traffickers, & Terrorist,(I could go on but it's just so repetitive) that the United States Government would have enough on their plate not to mention the little thing called Iraq.  Everyone I've talked here about it thinks the same thing. It's absurd!

thank you for sharing this story... I know Dan from high school and know he is not a dangerous crimnal or any threwat to our nation...he is a good guy trying to work and raise a family just like any one else. I was searching to try to find some way to help him, but am glad that others [besides his friends] see this as both horrifying and unjust.
