British troops 'should go home'

The prime minister of Iraq has said that British troops should withdraw from Southern Iraq because they are no longer needed there, according to reports today.

British troops should leave Iraq because they are no longer needed to maintain security, Iraq's prime minister has said.

Nouri al-Maliki told the Times there might still be a need for their experience in training Iraqi forces.

He said a "page had been turned" in the country's relationship with the UK.

But he criticised Britain's decision to move forces from a base at a palace in Basra to an airport on the edge of the city last year.

He said: "They stayed away from the confrontation, which gave the gangs and militia the chance to control the city.

"The situation deteriorated so badly that corrupted youths were carrying swords and cutting the throats of women and children. The citizens of Basra called out for our help . . . and we moved to regain the city."

Dave Keating, I like this story. It's good stuff. But he needs to recognise that the Brits are wasting their time, energy and lives in Afghanistan!

Dave Keating, I like the fact you highlighted this story, however this

"The situation deteriorated so badly that corrupted youths were carrying swords and cutting the throats of women and children"

This is not correct, UK forces handed over Basra to Iraqi securitry forces. The UK troops where on standbye to deploy and the special services where used in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq. UK rightfully thought that Iraq was ready for handover and USA's plan was to stay as 4 bases where under constuction and as yet not finnished. What ever happens in Iraq nothing is going to change if there is a handover or when the actual prelonged handover takes place. If it's going to be civil unrest and bids for power the status quo can not be avoided. The longer the troops are on the ground the more casualties and deaths.

America wants to control the oil their puppet will of course spout his mouth off.  The british are right to leave and I expect they will leave shortly after those american bases are completed perhaps we will be hearing shortly that the new US Bases are completed and on line to go into operation.
