Brook Astor's Son Found Guilty Of Defrauding His Mother
Anthony Dryden Marshall, the son of philanthropist Brook Astor, was found guilty of defrauding his mother in Manhattan court today. The Astor case verdict means Marshall can be sentenced to up to 154 years in prison. A hefty sentence considering Marshall himself is 85-years-old, and his sentencing may effectively mean he might die in prison. The sentencing is set for December 8.
Marshall was accused of pocketing millions of his mother's money by making financial decisions without her consent. He was convicted on 14 out of the 16 counts of fraud. Brooke Astor died two years ago at the age of 105. She became known for her profound philanthropic work. In 2006, the story of alleged abuse of Brooke Astor broke. Her grandson was accusing his father and Astor's son Anthony Dryden Marshall of neglect and abuse toward Alzheimer-stricken 104-year-old Astor. Marshall Jr. alleged Astor was living in sub-par conditions and her property was sold without her knowledge. As the result, Marshall lost the guardianship of his mother, replaced by Annette de la Renta, the wife of a famous fashion designer Oscar de la Renta.
