Gordon Brown visits Afghanistan

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an unannounced visit to Kandahar last night.  He bunked with British troops.  This is the first time Brown has made a longer than one day visit.

Brown's government has come under criticism for lack of proper equipment for British troops to fight their battle against the Taliban.

Brown vowed to defeat the insurgency in Afghanistan.  Brown said the next few months will be critical as more international troops join the fight against the insurgency in Afghanistan.

Brown vowed that international forces will press on to defeat the Taliban.

During his visit, Gordon Brown also met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.  Karzai has come under criticism lately for corruption and not doing enough to ensure governance in the war torn country.

President Obama's strategy is for a quick surge to provide security in Afghanistan and allow civilian government and non-governmental agencies to work on reconstruction, training of Afghan Security Forces and governance of the country.  President Obama is planning on a transition to Afghans to commence by July 2011 and the subsequent withdrawal of NATO Forces.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says the next few months will be critical as more international troops join the fight against the insurgency in Afghanistan.

Mr. Brown also said during a previously unannounced visit to Afghanistan Sunday that Afghan and international forces will press on to defeat the Taliban.

He met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at a military base in Kandahar.

Mr. Brown and other Western leaders have been pressuring Mr. Karzai to improve governance and crack down on corruption -- even as the Afghan war grows more deadly.
