NP Rank:
Burmese Pro-democracy Leader will be kept out of polls May 2010
Burma's military ruling seems to be immune to international pressure.
The Burmese Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be kept 18 more months in house detention, especially during the upcoming elections in May 2010.
Aung San Suu Kyi, the daughter of General Aung San - who led Burma into Independence, represents the sole hope of bringing democracy to Burma.
However, that only should be enough for the Burmese military junta to keep Suu Kyi out of upcoming elections in 2010.
Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to an additional 18 months of house arrest for violating state security laws by allowing an American man into her lakeside home after he swam there uninvited.
The US and European Union were swift to condemn the verdict.
However, the regional powers & trading partners China and India remained silent regarding the verdict.
Britain is to propose a UN arms embargo on Burma, but is facing an uphill struggle as the world once again divides on how to deal with a dictatorial and repressive regime.

Thanks Tamiya for this post about Aung San Suu Kyi who was sentenced because she gave shelter to the American, who was also sentenced, but to hard labor.
