Police had closed roads from Willingdon Avenue to Gamma Avenue and from Parker Street to Union Street after 2 unexploded mortar shells were found near Alpha Secondary School in Burnaby. The road closure is expected to last at least 2 hours.

Alpha Secondary School was evacuated, as well as residents from surrounding homes. The high school have canceled all evening activities, but expect to resume class as usual on Thursday morning.

Burnaby RCMP said in a press release that the fire department was called about 3:15 p.m. when the shells were noticed.

"The investigation into the type of munition, their condition and where they are from is continuing," police said.
