Riots broke out in downtown Vancouver after the Canucks lost Game 7 to the Boston Bruins. Cars were set alight, windows were smashed and shops were looted as police attempted to contain small groups of people causing damage. Just hours earlier, record-breaking crowds had flocked to Georgia street hours to watch the final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The mayor has identified those who caused the problems as 'hooligans, not true hockey fans." The cost for the damage is expected to exceed that of the previous Stanley Cup riots of 1994.
