Bus Crash Kills Four Disabled Passengers Near Dayton, Ohio
Four people have been killed and seven people have been wounded when a bus carrying special needs passengers has collided head-on with a tanker truck on Interstate 70 near Dayton, Ohio. Three special needs passengers and the driver of the bus have died. The truck has reportedly cut into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into the bus returning from Springfield Vocational Training Center with ten people on board. Eight special needs passengers were accompanied by two staffers on their way home from a Creative Learning Workshop. It is believed the bus was sent home early due to weather conditions.
Firefighters had to pull some of passengers trapped inside the bus. Some of the injured are in a critical condition. It is not clear what the cause of the accident was.
The names of the four people killed have been released. The killed individuals have been identified as Tracy Williams, Lonnie E. Acton, Alonzo Ruffin, and Kenny Fry.
Traffic on I-70 backed up more than a mile and curious motorists left their vehicles and stood on the side of the road to watch firefighters pull the injured passengers from the bus.
Traffic was re-routed to state Route 41 for several hours after officials shut down eastbound 70 following the accident, according to a release from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
