Bush to G-8: 'Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter'

George Bush surprised world leaders with a joke about his poor record on the environment as he left the G8 summit in Japan.

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter."

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

Mr Bush, whose second and final term as President ends at the end of the year, then left the meeting at the Windsor Hotel in Hokkaido where the leaders of the world's richest nations had been discussing new targets to cut carbon emissions.

dunkelberg, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Scary stuff, but good stuff.

Just when you think it couldn't get worse.  It makes you feel sorry for the other members of the G8 - and that's saying something!

When I have travelled I have always noted that there is more pollution and trash everywhere else than in my own country, the USA.  I have seen sewer running raw in creeks and rivers elsewhere, yet the U.S. is always the one pounced on.  Most visitors come here and compliment how clean everything looks.  I simply don't know why we are always the "punching bag."  At least our laws, for the most part, are respected here.  In other places the corrupt officials look the other way when they see pollution and it isn't documented, I guess.

Think China has surpassed everyone in this category.
