'Bush Lied' is a phony story line

Opinion. It’s really sad that NowPublic seems to have become a forum for teenagers and flakes who have little or no knowledge of the realities of political conflict in the USA, nor of world history, and who flood NP with calls for the impeachment of the leader of the free world. The usual cry is patterned after the bumper sticker motto of “Bush lied; people died”, a charge that has absolutely no relationship to the facts of the situation. I wish these people would just grow up. The following report from a newspaper that normally supports liberal Democrats may be of interest to anyone with some concern for the truth.

'Bush Lied' is a phony story line

12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 13, 2008 Washington Post (Excerpt)

Fred Hiatt is The Washington Post's editorial page editor.

WASHINGTON – Search the Internet for "Bush Lied" products, and you will find sites that offer more than a thousand designs. The basic "Bush Lied, People Died" bumper sticker is only the beginning.

Sen. John Rockefeller, D-W. Va., chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, set out to provide the official foundation for what has become not only a thriving business but, more important, an article of faith among millions of Americans. And in releasing a committee report Thursday, he claimed to have accomplished his mission, though he did not use the L-word. "In making the case for war, the administration repeatedly presented intelligence as fact when it was unsubstantiated, contradicted or even nonexistent," he said.

There's no question that the administration, and particularly Vice President Dick Cheney, spoke with too much certainty at times and failed to anticipate or prepare the American people for the enormous undertaking in Iraq.

But dive into Mr. Rockefeller's report, in search of where exactly President Bush lied about what his intelligence agencies were telling him about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, and you may be surprised by what you find.

On Iraq's nuclear weapons program? The president's statements "were generally substantiated by intelligence community estimates."

On biological weapons, production capability and those infamous mobile laboratories? The president's statements "were substantiated by intelligence information."

On chemical weapons, then? "Substantiated by intelligence information."

On weapons of mass destruction overall (a separate section of the intelligence committee report)? "Generally substantiated by intelligence information." Delivery vehicles such as ballistic missiles? "Generally substantiated by available intelligence." Unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to deliver WMDs? "Generally substantiated by intelligence information."

As you read through the report, you begin to think maybe you've mistakenly picked up the minority dissent. But, no, this is the Rockefeller indictment. So, you think, the smoking gun must appear in the section on Mr. Bush's claims about Saddam Hussein's alleged ties to terrorism.

But statements regarding Iraq's support for terrorist groups other than al-Qaeda "were substantiated by intelligence information." Statements that Iraq provided safe haven for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and other terrorists with ties to al-Qaeda "were substantiated by the intelligence assessments," and statements regarding Iraq's contacts with al-Qaeda "were substantiated by intelligence information."

good stuff:

joellerose, I like this story. It's good stuff. Lets go back to Clinton for the lies.  Bush got caught up in poor intellegents.  The guy is a caring, stick to his guns, make america safer guy.  Its easy to Blame Bush.  Every thing is Bushes fought even the economy that went down hill under a democratic congress who control America's purse strings.  A congress i might add that now has an 18% approval rating... but will we see that in the MSM or on NP?  Heck no.  Bush is the scape goat for all of Americas problems.  Even though GB is having recesson and France and Others.  I am wondering how Bush was able to cause their economy to crumble?

37KNUCKLEHEAD

Bush said he would fire anyone involved in the outing of Valerie Plame, He lied.

Anybody who is a Bush apologist is part of the problem.

The over 4000 US soldiers who died & the possibly 1,000,000 Iraqi including many innocent women & children died for the arrogance of an illiterate bumbling fool.

You may want to review the articles of impeachment brought by Dennis Kucinich last week, then tell me if you think Bush is the "make america safer guy".

Furthermore, please ask someone to proof read your essay before posting. It does not give your statements much credibility, when your spelling & grammar show that you lack the knowledge of the fundamentals in that regard.

I am not insulting you, nor mean to, but bring it up for your future benefit.

As a former college professor, I would be interested to know exactly where my spelling and grammar were incorrect.

joellerose,

It is the truth, you know ... it is childish and very uneducated to actually believe the whole "Bush Lied" montra from the Soros Left!

Unfortunately, that is what the Democrat Party has been sold ... and now they are paying for it with the likes of a candidate in the form of Barack Obama.

The Democrats really do deserve what they purchased.

René

Frankly, I am a Democrat and I was not sold on the lie that he lied. Nor did or do I support Obama. Saddam was given plenty of time to hide or move out any WMDs, and too many overlook haven given to al-Zarqawi and others. Also Saddam was rewarding the families of suicide bombers of all nationalities with $25,000 each. A lot of rewards.

BigT

Thank you for your intellectual honesty Rene. And, just to add a little, there were over twenty reasons Congress laid out for war. WMDs were just one.

Joellrose, I can only agree with you  "..[that] NowPublic seems to have become a forum for teenagers and flakes who have little or no knowledge of the realities of political conflict in the USA, nor of world history". Two days ago I posted on NP an opinion "An open comment on 'US needs 100 years to recover from Bush' ", see here, where in a more specific way I show how some NP commentators lost their refrain into an  arrogant chat exemplifying your opening words.

Anyway this is GS.

yes i do agree bush did not lie his intelligence failed him.

37KNUCKLEHEAD

He has so little of it, no wonder it failed.

Just like everything else he was a failure at.

joellerose

Thank you all for the many positive comments.  Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised that so many agreed with me because it illustrates that there are plenty of NP contributors who see things as they really are and for what they really are.  It is very encouraging.

djermano

I don't agree joellerose. He's a murderer, a maniac, and very bad guy. You do not know what you are talking about. So many Americans are fooled and you point the blame to us. I will never doubt he is a liar. He is bonded to it. You'll have to kill me, and I still wouldn't change my mind.

joellerose

The facts still remain that we have not had another serious terrorist attack by the Islamic butchers since 9/11, Gaddafi has given up his nuclear aspirations, North Korea appears ready to, and we have Iran surrounded if their insanity doesn't end soon - all this with the longest period of sustained growth exceeded only by Reagan and Clinton.  President Bush has obeyed every court order (unlke Jackson) and, the gentleman he is, has refused to dignify the vitriol, the obscenities, the death threats and the books and movies based on his assassination.  You speak nonsense.  In this time of WMD we have a perfect right to defend ourselves BEFORE the bomb is set off or the missile launched, and so does every other country.

djermano

Islamic people did not do 911. Gaddafi has not given up nuclear ambitions, and neither has N. Korea. I never saw the movie of Bush, and Bush has given us no economic prosperity. The country is in dire financial ruin, with gas prices at 5 USD a gal. The housing mortgage market has collapsed leaving many people evicted from their homes. There were no WMD found in Iraq, and that is only one of Bush's lies.  Do you not read or see my link above? Maybe truth is nonsense to you, but it is not  to me. If Bush is so truthful he will answer the many questions he refuses to answer. He's a liar.

joellerose

djermano,  You just said, "Islamic people did not do 911".  Now you have just made yourself and your comments look ridiculous.

djermano

Many people know Islamic people did not do it. I am not ridiculous.
