IT has been revealed that US President George Bush has signed off secret papers in July approving US incursions into Pakistan in the hunting down of the Taliban and al-Quaida.

Pakistan did not know of this deal, it has been reported.

US President George W Bush has secretly signed off on orders that allow American troops to carry out cross-border raids from Afghanistan into Pakistan.

The new authority, which Mr Bush signed off on in July, allowed last week's US special forces attack into the region known as the tribal areas.

The secret approval for the cross-border raids is reported to have grown out of US frustration with Pakistan's failure to crack down on militants in the remote border region.

The US wants Pakistan to do more to take on Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters seeking sanctuary on the Pakistani side of the border.

The presidential order was first reported by the New York Times.

US officials say they will notify Pakistan when they carry out a raid, but they will not seek permission..

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has offered staunch support for his army chief, who has vowed to defend Pakistan against attacks by US forces.
