In a move to discredit the growing popularity of the Iraqi journalist who threw a shoe at President George W. Bush, the Iraqi Prime Minister made a post on his website, saying the man acted on orders from 'a known militant'.

Muntader al-Zaidi's brother claims he was tortured into making that confession, and would 'do it again' if he had a second chance.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki moved yesterday to undermine the popularity of the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush.

We've been covering this unlikely story since it broke, and nowpublic staffer Dave Keating posted about al-Zaidi's upcoming trial date of December 30:

The journalist who threw a show at George W. Bush last week will reportedly go on trial for the incident on December 31. There have been huge demonstrations across Iraq demanding his release.

poor oligarch

This claim would be from the same US trained government that did the torturing (if, as I prefer to do, one chooses to believe the brother-in-law, and - to a lesser extent - the judge), the casual observer might assume?

“It was reported that the reporter had shouted: ‘This is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog,’ before flinging the first shoe at Bush.”

“Before he threw the second shoe, he shouted: ‘This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq.’”

“In Arab culture, it is a sign of contempt to show someone the soles of shoes.”

“Al-Zaidi was arrested for what the authorities called a shameful act, but he quickly became a hero among Arabs who said it was the best parting gift for a much-hated US president.”

“Demonstrations were held to call for his release.”

Al-Zaidi is a brave man.

Al-Zaidi shall be one of my role models.

Al-Zaidi captures Iraq’s hatred against Bush.
