Israel is closely tracking an Iranian freighter believed to be carrying weaponry for Hamas that is currently docked in the Red Sea outside the Suez Canal, after Egypt refused to permit it to cross the waterway to the Mediterranean.

According to a report received at the Defense Ministry from the Pentagon, the US Navy recently boarded an Iranian vessel that was carrying artillery shells and other weaponry.

"This is a big test for the Egyptians," a senior defense official said. "So far the Egyptians have prevented the ship from crossing the Suez and we hope it will stay that way."

The comparison of military resources below, of the State of Israel and Hamas, provide much better context to understand why civilians are being massacred at a ratio of 1:100. The  death toll in Gaza is around 1300++ including 400 children. 13 Israelis have died.

No joke Tikun. Why can Israel be armed to the teeth and Hamas not? Why can Israel kill and not Hamas?

Hamas, love them or hate them, are the legitimate Armed Forces of the elected government of Palestine. Elected in 2006 in Elections deemed Free and fair by the all parties involved, including Israel. But the outcome of the democratic process wasn't quite what was expected so the results were annulled. So much for democracy!

Why not stop the supply of arms to both Israel and Hamas?

The Security Council Resolution called for stopping the flow of arms into Gaza.  The US and Israel (Rice-Livni) soon reached an agreement on measures to ensure this result, concentrating on Iranian arms.  There is no need to stop smuggling of US arms into Israel, because there is no smuggling: the huge flow of arms is quite public, even when not reported, as in the case of the arms shipment announced as the slaughter in Gaza was proceeding.

Israel's arsenal includes:

...about 1000 main battle tanks, 1500 lower quality tanks, over 1000 artillery pieces, over 500 warplanes, about 200 helicopters, 13 warships, and 3 submarines. It has the latest unmanned aerial vehicles and can gather very precise intelligence using aerial photography and satellites.

Nuclear Weapons:

Combining these variables with the highest suggested power output of the reactor -- 200 MWt -- would suggest a total stockpile of between 250 and 500 weapons by the end of 2005. And combining these variables with the suggested power level of 150MWt would yield a total stockpile of between 200 and 375 weapons by the end of 2005.

Manpower:

Israel's active military is estimated to be some 170,000. With universal conscription, it has some 2.4 million people between 17-49 years old fit for military service and everyone has had some training.

Money:

Its military budget is 9% of its substantial GDP, totaling some $18.7 billion. It receives about $3 billion per year from the US.

By comparison, Hamas:

has the capacity to improvise rockets and explosives and to train fighters with small arms.

Hamas’s military wing is believed to have more than one thousand active members and thousands of supporters and sympathizers.

Heritage, can you seriously tell us that you want to see another go-around? More killing.

I think you will find Israel is a United Nations sancified legal state. Hamas, on the other hand, is a terrorist organisation that is banned in many countries. ALL legal states have a prima facia responsibility to defend the lives of their citizens. Israel has been repeatedly attacked by rockets from Hamas. Israel has a legal responsibility to fight back.
