:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday proposed a temporary 1.5 percent sales tax increase to deal with California's worsening fiscal crisis, which has created an $11.2 billion deficit in this year...
California needs a state bailout or increase tax; proposals:
o One unpaid day for workers
o Sales tax on car repairs
The most controversial part of the governor's plan may be his proposal to levy a sales tax on a variety of services, including car repairs and veterinary care, that are currently untaxed. Efforts to impose such taxes have created strong backlashes in some states, notably Florida, where repeated attempts have failed.

dave b.....Arnold is a Liberal in RINO clothing, Republican = Taxes on those worst equipped to pay. The Terminator never asked for Tax in his movies, what new idea has he now ?

All the liberals should be thrilled. Another tax increase. Oh wait, they are only happy when people who worked hard to become successful get punished with confiscatory taxes. My bad.
at 10:51 on November 7th, 2008
You left out "communists". Let's see. It is that well-known liberal Arnold Schwarzenegger who is imposing this tax.
These pathetic shotgun attacks on liberals are pitiful, stale rhetoric and a smoke screen to cover the fact that failed Republican leadership is behind higher taxes such as these.
It has to be a Republican tax. It's regressive. It won't hurt Arnold in the slightest.
So, whine all you want, Republican sycopants, it's your leadership who is turning on you to foot the bill for them and their wealthy cronies.

panzerlaywer...All the liberals should be thrilled. Another tax increase. the moment of hope confronted with tax. Florida lives without basic tax.
at 08:57 on November 7th, 2008
Let's see taxes on vet care and car repairs. Those are very regressive taxes, so they must be Republican taxes. Can't have Arnold trying to get his rich buddies to do their fair share.

dunkelberg, tax on car repairs, ...Can't have Arnold trying to get his rich buddies to do their fair share. A challenging idea, I agree

amyjudd....I don't think this is the way to go - he needs a new plan. I agree, the moment we decided for a new strategy we should not follow old ways.

I pretty much agree with you. This is indeed a very bad move by Gov. Schwarzenegger if ever he decides to continue to increase the tax on car repair.

Increased taxes for Veterinary care would not be limited to "dogs and cats". What about farms and ranches (dairy, cattle, horses, etc.) that are already suffering from high fuel costs, grain and hay costs, etc. These businesses and their revenus that they provide for California would be lost for good if we add yet another burden. They will move to another state.

jill mccracken..tax burden, These businesses and their revenus that they provide for California would be lost for good if we add yet another burden. They will move to another state. You are so right...

This request or demand for tax increases will reduce customer spending down to nothing as for our struggling customers to add another auto repair tax would not be good for anybody they will reduce there maint cost and auto expense which would not be good for our pollution because these vehicles will use and burn more oil also we will end up going out of business and there will be nobody to pay sales tax which means the objective to create job will be gone because our small business will not be around to pay sales tax therefore we will be in worse shape than now increase sales tax by 1/2 a percent and reduce spending

Shyawn K...tax increases will reduce customer spending down to nothing, small biz should be taxfree, I agree

The sales tax is a BAD IDEA. Did you know that the State of California forces gas stations to add the State highway excise tax of 18 cents a gallon and the 18 cent a gallon Federal excise tax to the price of gasoline and then have the station charge sales taxes on these! So you pay 3 cents a gallon that is a sales tax on an excise tax!
And you want to encounter the worst government agency on the planet? It is the California State Board of Equalization that administers the sales tax like a bunch of Mexican banditos. Arbitrary, capricious and uncompromising (and incompetent which is the scary part).
No more damn taxes! Cut spending, you idiots!

Maybe it is a good idea, because it will force people to reconsider in not buying a gas engine internal combustion engine.. His plan is what? For his pocket change or anohter motive. Push the people toward buying electric cars.?...Put the demand on the automakers to retool for electric or sink like the rest of mega banks.? Interesting weapon that word tax is..

djermano...tax schwarzenegger,..his plan is what ? He just has no choice, how to pay city workers with no cash ?
at 21:23 on November 10th, 2008
They need to readjust salaries, and the cost of living in California. That means no million dollar mortgages to pay, and to promote more electric cars. This means drilling for Geothermal, to create jobs, and start selling the electric to generate income for the city workers. Wasn't Arnold in on the Enron caper? Yes he was..........

How does he get away with his phoney superhero governor image? California needs to terminate the terminator, I think,

djermano..start selling the electric to generate income for the city workers. Interesting proposal

SOLARLIFE, found out Monday that the Fairbanks electric utility has a photovoltaic program where you can have a 25 kW installation on your lot and pump the power, when you get some sun, into the grid and get a credit. There are 35 of these installations already, and there is next to no output these days, but when there is you don't need to store power. It's not much of a bargain at $25,000, but there are those who like to fiddle with new gadgets and have the cash.
at 17:43 on November 13th, 2008
I think it is more than interesting....It should be a way of life in financing salaries for government workers, forever throwing taxes in the trash bin. But the issue is using the right resource to get that energy electric to sell. It sure is not by using coal, or oil. And we need energy security other than wind and solar which has limitations due to night-time, and windless days. Geothermal Development is the Pot of Gold; is the California Gold Rush.
We need Geothermal Wells dug in California to give the State 24-7 energy security.
I have been harping on this for a long time....that Geothermal Development also reduces the occurance of earthquakes, because it relieves pressure built-up in the ground that can cause the plates to move. I get people attacking me that it is miniscule....but if there are enough wells dug.......California will not only solve its energy problem, and paying its government workers, but also reducing or ultimately eliminating the earthquake threat.
I say give Arnold the news and go forward, or kick his butt out of government.
The Terminator needs to do more than terminate....He has got to produce. Let's go Arnie..get on with it.

Hey Arnold! You are just Bush on Steriods. Why not just cut 10% of the budget. Tell every agency to cut out the waste. There has to be at least 10% waste in every agency. Let them figure it out. Start with no more overtime pay! And sell that stupid mansion and go live in an apartment like Jerry Brown did!
