A Call to Boycott Israel
Amidst growing world outrage, it is being reported that a group of approximately 500 Israelis are calling for a boycott of Israel, similar to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign launched during the days the racist system of apartheid was practiced by South Africa.
From The Guardian:
Every day that Israel pounds Gaza brings more converts to the BDS cause - even among Israeli Jews. In the midst of the assault roughly 500 Israelis, dozens of them well-known artists and scholars, sent a letter to foreign ambassadors in Israel. It calls for "the adoption of immediate restrictive measures and sanctions" and draws a clear parallel with the anti-apartheid struggle. "The boycott on South Africa was effective, but Israel is handled with kid gloves ... This international backing must stop."
Fourteen days ago, on December 26, 2008, Israel began its assault on Gaza after reporting rockets had been fired into Israel by Hamas. Israel's current campaign of attack, which has now sent troops in on the ground, going house to house, has been indiscriminate, killing close to 800 civilians.
Several incidents involving the Israeli Army are being investigated. Most recently, the Red Cross reported that members of a Palestinian family, numbering between 100 to 110 people, were ordered into a home where the building was later bombed.
The UN is concerned that war crimes may have been committed.
