NP Rank:
A Call to Boycott Israel
Amidst growing world outrage, it is being reported that a group of approximately 500 Israelis are calling for a boycott of Israel, similar to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign launched during the days the racist system of apartheid was practiced by South Africa.
From The Guardian:
Every day that Israel pounds Gaza brings more converts to the BDS cause - even among Israeli Jews. In the midst of the assault roughly 500 Israelis, dozens of them well-known artists and scholars, sent a letter to foreign ambassadors in Israel. It calls for "the adoption of immediate restrictive measures and sanctions" and draws a clear parallel with the anti-apartheid struggle. "The boycott on South Africa was effective, but Israel is handled with kid gloves ... This international backing must stop."
Fourteen days ago, on December 26, 2008, Israel began its assault on Gaza after reporting rockets had been fired into Israel by Hamas. Israel's current campaign of attack, which has now sent troops in on the ground, going house to house, has been indiscriminate, killing close to 800 civilians.
Several incidents involving the Israeli Army are being investigated. Most recently, the Red Cross reported that members of a Palestinian family, numbering between 100 to 110 people, were ordered into a home where the building was later bombed.
The UN is concerned that war crimes may have been committed.

Our governments will not act, so we must.
Look for 729 in barcodes to identify Israeli products.

That's true Pythiian 1. The same could be said for the UN Resolutions but any and all efforts to raise awareness of the situation should, and must, be embraced.

Thank you for your comment, Pythiian1.
As long as the U.S. gives unqualified support of Israel, it may well be the world that will force a change.
The U.S. supported apartheid South Africa until it was forced to listen to the world.
The Israelis calling for a boycott will have a long, hard road to travel, since it is reported that the majority of Israel's citizens support the current actions being taken by their government and the Israeli Army.

Thanks Karen for this piece.
It's a great idea, and I'm applauding these Israelis for their efforts. However, I'm mindful that there have been other calls for boycott in the past, and they didn't seem to sway the Israeli authority at all.
Of course, we can only hope...

It is my understanding that many of the Dead Sea salt products, lotions, moisturisers and cleansers originate from Israel.
All of the products I have seen, containing Dead Sea salts, pictured in catalogues and products, whose labels I have read in stores, list Israel as the place of origin for the salts.

Absolutely true, and indeed the UN having been constantlyaccusing Hamas of war crimes too. However, this is so trivial in scale compared to the Israeli attrocities of course, where there is also a clearler chain of command, and so perhaps these will be more easily prosecutable.

A number of prominent British Jews have written an open letter calling on the Israeli government to halt its military operations in Gaza immediately.
The letter, published in the Observer, warns the military action, far from improving security, will strengthen extremism and destabilise the region.
The signatories, who declare themselves "passionate supporters of Israel", include several rabbis.

Paschen & gahooch,
So that means individuals should simply take no action? Because it won't work?

As individuals we can and should use what little influence we have to effect change.

You're welcome. You've nailed the perennial problem of US foreign policies in the Middle East, especially toward Israel. I'd venture to add that even when some US officials may have winced inward as the conflict escalates, publicly, they've certainly shown unwavering support for Israel.
It's not just the Israelis in Israel, but there is the at-large diaspora communities around the world that have donated funds and given supports.
The EU may have some say, but so far, Sarkozy as the EU President doesn't seem to be that successful in his effort for a cease-fire, as evident when Israel rejected France's request.

I am impressed and surprised Karen, Well said in deed.

I do think it may be to late for a boycott though. It may take a lot more by now. The World is not willing to wait as long as it had to for the South African Boycott to work and rid us from that Apartheid regime.

Bin Laden is Saudi.
Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest producer of Oil.
Since Laden masterminded the 9/11 and the various US and allied deaths afterwards, why dont you people boycot Saudi oil also.
Stop using Petroleum based fuel altogether.
See the list of some of the petroleum based products :-
Petrol (Gasoline for some countries)
Diesel
Aviation fuel
Jet Fuel
Liquidied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Asphalt.
I don't know the barcode of these products. But basically they would have written on the packs - if there any. There are many companies producing and marketing this. So, boycot all these products.

Enjoy your Occupation oranges my friend:
The Jaffa orange, also known as the Shamouti orange, is a very sweet, almost seedless orange exported from Israel. It takes its name from the city of Jaffa.

A Boycott against Israel will never ever work, unless the International community would boycott the USA as well. The Two are inseparable.

You're going to have a tough time with this boycott. This list includes the much of the technology on your computer as well as Internet security and communication.

The boycott of Israeli agricultural products in the 70s/80s led Israel to develop a technology & biotech sector which so much of the IT and pharmaceutical industries now depend on. I don't think this boycott is going to work unless you (1) stop buying computers and software (2) stop using the Internet (3) stop using medication.
Also, up until the time Hamas seized Gaza Israel was purchasing and exporting Gazan flowers and fruits. Israeli industry was sourcing from Gazan light manufacturing products as well. And Gazans worked in Israel.
When it came to economic development Israel did more for Gaza than Egypt before (pre-1967) or Hamas (post-2005).
at 08:08 on January 12th, 2009
Of course not, individuals should do what they think is correct; however, if you want to boycott based on the above list then you need to stop using your PC and the Internet. After all, your PC contains Intel components and your ISP uses security and communication products developed in and sold by Israeli companies. Also, if you take generic medications there's a decent chance it was made by Tiva, an Israeli firm which is the largest producer of generic meds.
Todays Israeli economy is more than oranges.
