Calm before the storm
Irene, the dawn is breaking
It is classic, a wait-to-see time. Low clouds have drifted in that are thick and moving slowly. Look closely, they are going the wrong way. Usually, the winds blow from the west to the east. Now, clouds are circulating broadly. They are coming from the south and from the Atlantic westward. The high pressure from the west that would push this mass out to sea is absent this morning.
Birds must know something because they are in their roosts or have departed to another location. Just now, the breeze is picking up with some gusts. The gradual build up is happening now. By this afternoon, it will be raining hard as the bands continue to move toward Philadelphia.
We’re waiting.
“Hurricane Irene moves up East Coast; may hit Washington area Saturday night
By Ashley Halsey III and Carol Morello, Published: August 26 | Updated: Saturday, August 27, 6:40 AM
The leading edge of Hurricane Irene arrived in the Washington region at dawn on Saturday with light rain falling at the mouth of the Potomac River and along the coastal beaches as far north as Delaware.
The brunt of the storm was moving north from Cape Hatteras and was expected to arrive in the Washington area late Saturday and into Sunday morning before heading toward New York and New England.”
