Cameron Douglas, the Son of Michael Douglas, Sentenced to Five Years in Jail on Drug Charges

Cameron Douglas was sentenced to five years in jail on Tuesday April 20 for charges relating to drugs, after Douglas apologized to the court and his family and said that he he felt he had missed a lot of opportunities to change his life according to USA Today.

The judge said earlier that he did not have confidence that Douglas would turn his back on drugs after pleading guilty in January to drug charges.

Michael Douglas wrote a letter to the judge asking for him to show leniency to his son in this drugs case. The letter was five pages long and handwritten according to The Guardian, and it detailed Cameron's long battle with drugs and claims the the celebrity lifestyle had something to do with it. That Cameron has struggled with living with a celebrity name and that is part of the reason he turned to drugs in the first place.

Michael Douglas is himself the son the the famous Kirk Douglas, so he has had some experience with this as well.

"I have some idea of the pressure of finding your own identity with a famous father. I'm not sure I can comprehend it with two generations to deal with," he wrote.

This type of crime carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in the United States, unless the judge decides to be lenient, and in this case it looks like Michael Douglas' letter worked.

Drungs are a waste of time, prosecuting drug abuse is a waste of time and critical resources.
