Canada: Law Group Feeds on Maple Leaf Foods Class-Action Suit over "Listeria Hysteria".
Opinion
Barry Artiste
One wonders if the lawsuits were family Victim implemented, or Lawyer initiated in what some may perceive Vulture picking clean the bones of the tainted carcass of Maple Leaf foods.
Certainly the victims deserve compensation, but I am curious that a law firm group a thousand miles away two provinces over makes the media as this Law Group state publicly they are going to represent all Canadians in such a fashion. I do not know what is more tragic, a century old meat company which may lose everything or a Law Group which will ensure they do and to the victor go the spoils, the victor being the Law Group and the lucrative money this Law Group stand to make on the "Listeria Hysteria"! List of recalled Maple Leaf products

Maple Leaf facing class-action suit

OTTAWA - A class-action lawsuit has been launched against Maple Leaf Foods after a link was confirmed between deli meats processed at its Toronto plant and a food-borne bacterium linked to at least six deaths in Canada.
The lawsuit, filed in Ottawa by the Regina-based Merchant Law Group, is on behalf of 300 consumers across the country.
When reached Tuesday morning, a spokeswoman for Maple Leaf Foods declined to comment. On Monday, federal public health authorities confirmed a total of twelve deaths have been linked to an outbreak of listeriosis.
Six of those cases have been connected to the particular bacteria strain found at Maple Leaf Foods while the remaining six deaths are currently under investigation.
Eleven deaths were in Ontario and one was in British Columbia, the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed at a news conference.

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff. We, those of us not poisoned, can take this as a wake up call about industrializing our food supply.

It may be sad that Maple Leaf may take the fall, but I have to agree with Barbara's comment.
One thing that has been a real eye-opener is how many "brand names" Maple Leaf has under it. How can we keep track of it all? A code number doesn't cut it anymore. We need to be made aware where our food is coming from, ie. produced and packaged at Maple Leaf Meats, Toronto, Ontario. All we get is packaged for "Such and Such foods", etc. (but who and where?)
It seems many in Canada have most likely eaten something out of Maple Leaf in the last few weeks (unless one is a vegetarian). This catastrophe is far from over, if the incubation period of listeriosis can be up to two months. No one facility should have such a monopoly on our food supply. So if it takes a class action suit to shake things up, so be it.

I worked for Maple Leaf Foods until Feb 2008 when I was let go for reasons they fabricated, the real reason was the result of my failing health which followed a heart attack that I experienced on August 25th 2005. My role at Maple Leaf was to implement plant maintenance software and provide software support and training to all the MLF plants. The company did not support me in any manner and the harder I pushed to improve the plant environments the more they took measures to build a case to remove me. I could tell you a story that I'm sure would support the case against MLF and I will do this simply because of the mistreatment I received from this company. I have spent a good deal of time in Maple Leaf plants across Canada including the Bartor Road facility where the outbreak originated. I know what went on behind the scenes and what went wrong that resulted in this horrific accident.

Thanks everyone for your comments and flags, a monopoly such as Maple Leaf can be a tad scary, I had heard that government cutbacks last year may have cut the hygiene inspection and testing department, as with all cutbacks, health and safety are always to first things cut. From Hospitals,Schools, to Hygiene at a plant and Food safety by our inspectors when governments do not hire enough inspectors.

Barry, cutbacks were NOT in health & safety or maintenance. We were asked to watch our travel, buy using conferencing, reduce our printing, not having meetings that went over the lunch hour etc.. Nothing that involves health, safety, maintenance or sanitation. This could have happened to any food company I wish people would remember that!

Hey someone, my comments were on Government cutbacks, I rephrased my comment after realising how it could be construed that way, my apoliogises

This is a good compay, with good people. Food safety is a highly complicated issue. What we eat daily from ANY source is subject to question. This is a tradegy for all affected. I hope it can result in better food safety to be practiced by each and every one of us. The legal process is flawed and unfortunately the path ahead will be less about the "isssue" and not about the unfortunate victims or the Corporate interest and responsibility.....but about laywers trying to fill their own pockets from the mis-fortunes of others.

Is there any other way? (Lawyers filling their own pockets)
