Interesting that Costa Rica places 29 on this list, a country that does not even have an army.

Another interesting list is the Happy Planet Index,
where Costa Rica is #1 this year, Canada is 89, USA 114

I guess we all have our own different definition of peace.

It boils down to the criteria established and who measures it. In this case they looked at Canada's long standing Peacekeeping record, crime rate and political stability.

Yep well done Canada..........give peace a chance.

Thanks for this, albertacowpoke! And, I would like to add that Canada (unlike the United States) also continues to strengthen the commercial and cultural bonds with Cuba. Canada is the biggest tourist emitting market to Cuba.

You;re welcome Rhonda:)

Rhonda, I have been against the embargo since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Previously, a revolution in Mexico sponsored by Cuba would have been devastating in its consequences.
But, we have just elected Obama and Fidel doesn't want to give on anything, including sitting down to talk to Obama.
We are no longer the ones "causing" the embargo. As far as I am concerned, the sooner Castro dies, the better. Castro IS the problem, as my friend, Anna, the ex-Cuban university administrator who had to flee Cuba for fear of being arrested said.

I would love to live in Canada, its a great country so, well, err, peaceful, but expensive and some what cold.

Thanks Babel for your kind words. Many Brit Ex Mil retired out of Suffield. They have pretty good jobs with the WES Training System. Medicine Hat is a great town and close to the mountains.

Yep, spent a bit of time in the sin bin bar when I was there many years ago as a young lad and the ski resorts are not so far away. Then the great rodeo's in Calgary, Alberta would make a good home for me, but for the lure of the tropics and dusky maidens, well one dusky maiden. The beaches and cool cheap but tasty beer.
I expect there maybe some of my old friends at WES of whom run similar systems in UK in Hythe Kent. They may have been attracted to Med Hat when they were on live exercises, people like me of whom love that attitude of driving 200 miles to eat breakfast with a friend, lol

LOL 200 miles of nothing. You no longer need the lone tree in Suffield as a navigation point, they have GPS in every vehicle lol.

...not that cold, depending on where in Canada you live. It's a big country. The wescoast has mild winters (last year was bad though, you can probably thank climate change for that).

Working with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperative Conference on Information Literacy, I had the incredible experience of working with the Canadian delegation. Together with the Australians, the participants were world class in promoting collaboration and tolerance for diverse ideas and cultures. That to me was the key to their success.

Thank you Jim. Canadians are very humble and sometimes we need to be told by outsiders who we are. Our approach to problems, I believe, has made us successful during peacekeeping operations. Thank you for your kind words.

I am sure that Canada is worthy of some kind of award, but these international "beauty contests" are mostly just an opportunity for someone to make points with some group or other at the expense of some other group.
I remember when we first lived in Rome, Italy. UNESCO or some other big organization had rated Rome as the best city in the world.
Believe me, as much as I had always wanted to live in Rome since I was a kid, Rome is far from "the best city in the world" by any sane standard. The Romans mostly didn't even know about it and/or didn't care. And, the many of the ones who knew about it laughed.
How about if we send you twenty million illegal aliens and see what your stats are the next time around?

Heck Roy I live in Canada, doesn't that account for something lol. Amy and Jordan live here too. Sara, Blue Crush and the Cynic. Geeze and our star Barry, how much better can it get?
at 20:56 on November 2nd, 2009
What happened to Barry?
When I lived in Italy, I became acutely aware of the real dominance that affects other nations: the media, not the war machine.
at 21:04 on November 2nd, 2009
And the media does not affect the US?
at 21:24 on November 2nd, 2009
We watch American movies, just like everyone else. Doesn't bother us, but bothers the Italians who, at some point in the late 70s forgot how to make good movies.
So, you turn on the TV in Rome or Milan, and you watch an awful lot of the same shows as here dubbed into Italian.
At first in Rome, there was basically no Italian dance music. Before we left, they got it going and well.
That is what I am talking about. I had no idea that Italian TV would be so Americanized before I got there.
I also had this idea that somebody somewhere was interfering with Italian films making it to the US.
I was wrong.
Once the great directors of the '60s and '70s stopped work, essentially, there were very few films made in Italy worth looking at.
at 21:24 on November 2nd, 2009
If you meant American media affects other nations your spot on. But that wasn.t what I gleamed from your previous comment
