A Song for Our Canadian Troops - Lest We Forget

A Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations named Canada as one of the most peaceful nations in the world.  The determination was made on Canada's support of Peacekeeping Missions, low levels of violence and political stability.

Canada placed number eight globally while it topped North American, Central American and Carribean Nations.

Canada's new ambassador to the U.S., Gary Doer, accepted the award for Canada.

WASHINGTON — Canada has been named one of the most peaceful nations in the world for its support of UN peacekeeping missions, low levels of violent crime and political stability.

The Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations named Canada as the most peaceful country in the North and Central America and Caribbean region and put it eighth place worldwide on its global peace index.

Ambassador Gary Doer accepted the award at the symposium in Washington on Sunday.

It boils down to the criteria established and who measures it.  In this case they looked at Canada's long standing Peacekeeping record, crime rate and political stability.

Thanks for this, albertacowpoke! And, I would like to add that Canada (unlike the United States) also continues to strengthen the commercial and cultural bonds with Cuba. Canada is the biggest tourist emitting market to Cuba.

I would love to live in Canada, its a great country so, well, err, peaceful, but expensive and some what cold.

Yep its a fair title.... Pity a country can not be given a Nobal peace prize, lol

Thanks Babel for your kind words.  Many Brit Ex Mil retired out of Suffield.  They have pretty good jobs with the WES Training System.  Medicine Hat is a great town and close to the mountains.

Yep, spent a bit of time in the sin bin bar when I was there many years ago as a young lad and the ski resorts are not so far away.  Then the great rodeo's in Calgary, Alberta would make a good home for me, but for the lure of the tropics and dusky maidens, well one dusky maiden. The beaches and cool cheap but tasty beer.

I expect there maybe some of my old friends at WES of whom run similar systems in UK in Hythe Kent. They may have been attracted to Med Hat when they were on live exercises, people like me of whom love that attitude of driving 200 miles to eat breakfast with a friend, lol

LOL 200 miles of nothing.   You no longer need the lone tree in Suffield as a navigation point, they have GPS in every vehicle lol.

...not that cold, depending on where in Canada you live. It's a big country. The wescoast has mild winters (last year was bad though, you can probably thank climate change for that).

Working with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperative Conference on Information Literacy, I had the incredible experience of working with the Canadian delegation. Together with the Australians, the participants were world class in promoting collaboration and tolerance for diverse ideas and cultures. That to me was the key to their success.

Thank you Jim. Canadians are very humble and sometimes we need to be told by outsiders who we are.  Our approach to problems, I believe, has made us successful during peacekeeping operations.  Thank you for your kind words.

Heck Roy I live in Canada, doesn't that account for something lol.  Amy and Jordan live here too.  Sara, Blue Crush and the Cynic.  Geeze and our star Barry, how much better can it get?

Barry is around, just not as much. He will be back full tilt when he recuperates.

Inconvenient truths and events they clearly over-looked:#1: FLQ Crisis in the early 1970s and martial law in Canada.#2: The 1990 Oka Crisis: Canadian troops in military stand-off with Mohawk Warriors involving heavy weapons and a siege.#3: Violent crime levels far higher than Europe but lower than US.#4: The slaughter of students in 1989 and the invention of the high school shoot out in the 1970s in Ottawa. Canada luckily benefits from the fact most people in the world find the country so dull, they can't be bothered to investigate the country's history, actual reality or how it works.

For full disclosure here are some of the events Iffy mentioned:

October Crisis and the War Measures Act by Pierre Elliot Trudeau

Oka Standoff

Marc Lepines attack on Ecole Politique

As so many countries around the globe, Canada is not perfect and has had its share of violent acts during its history.

The Committe that made this selection used its own criteria to place Canada into this "most peaceful countries in the world" category.

As one who has traveled extensively, I have never found Canada dull.  That definition, I think, is in the eye of the beholder.  To me Canada has never been dull and Canada is a country that extends for some 3500 miles from coast to coast and about the same distance from the U.S. border to it.s northernmost point.  Canada is diverse and multi-cultural and with it come the same problems that exist in many other countries in the world.

Thank You for your comments Iffy.  I, for one, feel priviledged to live in this vast land and have never found it dull.

Don't get me wrong: I love Canada and think it is an exciting place. Just think ignorance of its true reality is widespread and fuels the 'dull' reputation.

Karl Gotthardt - albertacowpoke

No I'm not getting your wrong.  Like every other place in the world we have our problems.  We have our ups and downs and essentially ones country is what we make of it.  I have lived in many other countries in my time and  somehow it has  always been nice to touch back on Canadian soil.  I love the wide open spaces in Alberta.  Of course I don't live in a city, so that certainly helps.

Iffy,

"Dull" is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm a proud Canadian.
