Canadian Author Weighs In On Australian 2013 Federal Elections
I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Australia when I was invited to read at the MidSumma Festival which is an annual celebration of gay culture held in Melbourne Australia.
It was nice to get an opportunity to really meet Australians and get a feel for a country that I admire.
With that said, I feel that Australia would fair better on the global market if they re-elected Kevin Rudd and the Labour Party over Tony Abbott Liberal National Coalition.
My reason behind favouring Prime Minister Rudd is that Australia has made great gains in their public image from the Labour Party.
Tony Abbott as the official opposition seemed to utilize really low standards in debasing his opponent Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Some of his statements seemed very misogynistic.
Tony Abbott has also had a history of making homophobic statements which would be viewed negatively on the World stage. Right now Europe and North America are reeling from a series of “anti-gay” laws which the Russian Federation has enacted and I feel that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd would be more vocal in his opposition towards governments that treat people unfairly.
Furthermore, I was not too happy to hear that Mr. Abbott felt that climate change was “absolute crap.”
Under the Labour Party, Australia was able to do what most countries could not which is avoid the global recession.
Canada and Australia are very similar countries and I see how Canada has followed Australia’s lead in some areas and visa versa. For example, Canada has eliminated the “penny” something Australia did years ago. Another example, in my city of Vancouver British Columbia, we are just implementing the CompassTM bus pass system just like Melbourne did.
So, I hope Australia sees that the Labour Party will continue on this trend setting track and show the world that Australia is a country with good leadership and values.
