Canadian Embassy in Colombia threaten by paramilitaries
Caracas, Venezuela, 15 June 2008. According to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo and for the last two weeks, Canadian Embassy in Bogotá has received various attack threats by Colombian paramilitaries group Black Eagles. These threats have been caused by the assylum and protection provided by Canada to witnesses in the legal process against paramilitaries. The most worrying aspect of the terrorist threats is the fact that paramilitaries were able to obtain classified inside information over the asylum seekers. Minutes after decision were taken over the protection of a witness and his family, threats were received at the Embassy. Black Eagles is a member of notorious paramilitary organization called United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) funded in 1997. EU and US have included this organization in their terrorist list.
Colombia is currently going through a political crisis due to the links of paramilitaries with politicians of the governing party and various MPs.
