A formal military investigation has been launched by the Canadian military into the death of three children in Afghanistan. Relatives and villagers in Kandahar say that an unexploded rocket left by Canadian forces killed the children, who were looking for scrap metal.

A former mujahedeen fighter says the children were killed by a live round, which the Canadian military has denied.

A third child has died from wounds sustained in an explosion in an Afghan village that residents and relatives alleged was caused by a shell fired by Canadian troops.

The Canadian military announced Monday it was launching an investigation into the incident in the village of Salehan, about 15 kilometres southwest of Kandahar city.

A third Afghan child died Tuesday, following a deadly blast that is being blamed on Canadian troops.

The child has been identified by hospital officials as four-year-old Juma Gul.
