Canadian National Election Announced for October 14
The commercials and speeches given all last week were just a prelude, but now it's official: Canadians will be going to the polls for a national election on October 14.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced this morning that he had asked the Governor General to dissolve parliament.
Harper made the announcement outside Rideau Hall after his conversation with Michaëlle Jean."Her Excellency, the Governor General, has seen fit to dissolve Parliament," he said.
The vote will take place one day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

When asked about what the outcome of the vote might be, the Conservative leader said, "We believe it is going to be a tough election. We believe it will be a tight election. And, yes, we believe in all likelihood it will be a minority."
Here's a partial transcript from Harper's election call speech, I'll be updating when the full speech comes online.
"The frank reality is this Parliament is at its useful end," Mr. Harper said."Between now and Oct. 14th, Canadians will choose a government to look out for their interests at a time of global economic trouble," he said.
"They will choose between clear direction or uncertainty; between common sense or risky experiments; between steadiness or recklessness."
In what will likely be a regular riposte, the Liberals issued a press release Sunday under the headline "Conservative Broken Platform Promise of the Day," which quoted the Tory blue book of 2006.
A fellow Canadian has some interesting thoughts on the various leaders and their speeches today:
All five major party leaders made television appearences to either give speeches, take question or both. Here are my initial impressions.

If this piece is reporting you should balance the Stephen Taylor reference with a blogger from the progessive side. Stephen Taylor is one of the leading Con bloggers so you should how about someone equally partisan on the other side like Jason Cherniak.
