Canadian Tamils demonstrate against China’s support to Sri Lanka

Several hundred Canadian Tamils gathered outside the Chinese Consulate in Toronto, Wednesday, August 26, 2009 to protest against China’s financial, economic, and diplomatic support of the Sri Lankan government. Many Tamils attending the protest have their relatives or friends in the Sri Lanka military supervised internment camps in Vavuniyaa where more than 300,000 Tamil civilians.

The protest started at 3 p.m. and lasted until 8 p.m.

Protesters chanted and waved placards, calling for China to stop its aid to Sri Lanka.

Demonstrators also passed out pamphlets to inform the public about the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka.

China is the largest supplier of arms to the Sri Lankan military and increased its help when other countries refused to sell military supplies for use in the civil war.

"Last year, China was also Sri Lanka’s largest foreign donor, providing more than $1-billion into the country’s treasury. Due to China’s diplomatic support in the international arena, Sri Lanka was also able to disregard western nations’ calls to adhere to human rights norms," said the spokesperson for the protest organizers.

Several Hundred Tamils as opposed to several thousands in April/May in Toronto.

One can be very sure that the members of the Tamil diaspora in Canada would have gone to Sri Lanka to check on their relatives whom they left behind when they migrated. Love has no bounds. Leaving luxury for a couple of weeks to check on their most loved relatives will not be harmful to anybody's health.

There seems to be a boycott Scottish products because of some reason. Maybe the Canadian protestors can take a cue from that and start boycotting any and all Chinese products - like noodles, toys etc. Let us teach the Chinese a lesson, machans...!!!

Give it a try as god love 'triers'. Can't the diaspora tamils take a small risk like this for their loved ones? C'mon guys. Your leader shown you the path, right?

How about the dole? Will you still get it if you take a couple of weeks off to go abroad.

How about life?  Just like that of the nearly 3 million Tamils living in the South, doing business with Sinhalese, working as MDs, CEOs, Directors,  managing Sinhalese staff etc.,

Aren't the Canadian authorities responsible for the convenience of the Chinese Consulate members on their soil ? Democracy all right, does Canada let a set of  hooligans harass another country's diplomats over some irrelevent issue to Canada ???

No. Only the LTTE supporters are supposed to do so.

Terrorists do not understand what Nihal Muller says.

The Tamil protesters are annoying and it is no wonder that their government wanted to got rid of the Tamils.  The Sri Lankan government should be invited here to Toronto to get rid of the Tamils here too.  Really annoying!
