Barry Artiste Op/Ed

You know it's funny that on one hand it is said do not paint the actions of one with the same brush to an entire populace. I have been writing Op/Ed for Now Public for close to two years and have seen comments fly both Pro and Con against and for Americans from not only Canadians but from readers all over the world.  When Bush was in power the majority of readers slammed not just Bush, but Americans in general, I have had lengthy tirades posted in my comments section by many. Now if we are told not to paint the actions of one with the same Brush, how come now that Obama is President that all of a sudden there is a rush for a USA LOVE FEST, certainly Hypocritical if you ask me, as far as I am concerned the USA has the same people, you had reviled, only the Head of Government has changed.  I have always supported the American people as loving and fiercely loyal and patriotic to their country. Something sorely lacking in our own Country Canada, I say this because when we as Canadians stop what we are doing, eyes glued to the TV, reading every little tidbit on Obama, it makes me think those who deride the USA and it's citizens are most likely Jealous of the US Patriotism, Loyalty to their Commander in Chief and a Nation as one of the most beloved place to immigrate to the world over.  Many US schools take an Oath of Alliegance at the beginning of the school day, flag raising in the morning etc.  Canada use to do that too in the 1960s pre Trudeau era.

For two decades I have attended many sporting events, when the Canadian Anthem is sung, normally one stands at attention, hand over heart, many a time I look around and see thousands standing or sitting with nary a word coming out of their mouths, I feel like shouting, Hey at least make an attempt to sing the words!  Watch an American at a sporting event sing their National Anthem and you will see a big difference, all are standing, hand over heart, singing their lungs out with flags waving.

It would be nice if Canadians had that kind of loyalty and patriotism shown to their own Country and Leader, we had it at one time long ago, but lost it. With divided political parties in Canada and whiny infighting with their own personal agenda among our leaders, I doubt we will ever get it back, "pity!"

Jealousy is in the "Eye of the Beholder" and I am the first one to admit I am jealous of the Loyalty, Patriotism and People of that Great Country to the South of us called the "Good ole USA"! I surmise since Canada came to a standstill during Obamarama, they are envious of the USA as well.

Canadians across the country paused at home, work and school on Tuesday for what many believe will become a generation-defining moment.

The library at Ottawa's Carleton University in Ottawa fell uncharacteristically silent while dozens watched the inauguration of President Barack Obama on a TV.

That ended in a burst of applause the moment Obama recited his oath as the 44th president of the United States.

I hate to say it, but the use of welfare has denuded Canada of any passion for the country or willingness to make the place better. In the past (the 60s for example), immigrants to Canada had to work hard to settle in the country. Right away, they would want to assimilate and get on with their lives and dreams. Now, they end up on welfare or some sort of government schemes. Apartment buildings surrounding Canadian cities fester with armies of immigrants unemployed or on some welfare scheme. Rather than pioneering a new future for themselves and contributing to the country's wealth, they passively wait for the government to do something. And many just dream about moving to the US one day.

Hmmph! We got plenty welfare and generational welfare families down here in the good ole USA, and many are immigrants too, including the illegal ones and ungrateful ones.

So that is no excuse. Canada is a great country too, fabulous land, and diverse peoples.

Greatly admire Canadian independence and resourcefulness. met many down in Yuma and Quartize, Arizona -snowbirds. some just as arrogant as many accuse US citizens, but some my best friends.

Though perhaps some of what you say may be valid, Immigrants for the most part like to contribute, though some from African countries may rely on the dole, if you walk downtown eastside of vangroovy and you will be hard pressed to see immigrants panhandling, drugged out or causing havoc, it is the lily white set who are clearly the majority. If there are Immigrants in the downtown eastside causing havoc and judging by the arrests it seems to those from latin american who are small time drug dealers plying their trade, with a smattering of a few Romanians taking the slack in petty theft.  Now dont call me racist on this, those who know me here, know I wouldn't state it, unless I actually witness it in my job, which I do. Mind you the immigrants who do commit these crimes join the longer list of Lily whites who do far worse as well.

Blaming something like welfare and immigrants for a lack or passion and patriotism is only an excuse. Canada accepts many well trained and experienced peoples from many different countries; they arrive seeking to make a life for themselves in their respective careers only to discover that the years they spent at education and experience in their own country, are wasted because Canadian employers discriminate, instead of evaluate.

So what's happening is that many qualified people are coming to Canada but they are not given the opportunity to put into practice the skills they've learned elsewhere. I admit that welfare is not an answer either, its a crutch. a crutch that is made up of taxpayers dollars. but there's no other programs available to these people to affirm their skills and be credited for them.

Canada pretty much tells them if you're an engineer back home, you're welcome here. but once they get here they're fed a story about our codes and practices are too different for them to just take an intense evaulation and education program. they have to re educate entirely within the country or drive for yellow cab, work labour and minimum wage.

Do you enjoy minimum wage? if you could afford to immigrate to another country, have it all planned out, get there and be told that your education is not on par therefor you cannot work in a field related to your skills how would you handle that? you don't have enough to get back home.

Then we have Canadians who set up sponsorship programs to brings immigrants into the country. some of these sponsors are not as benevolent as they seem, and the people they help come to Canada are indebted to them for large sums of money, yes some go on welfare and that is sometimes partially collected by these sponsors.

Personally i've yet to meet an unemployed immigrant, got to work to stay here. but i've met a lot of sponsored people too, they work for peanuts under a contract that supplies housing and food. rough labour that no Canadian wants to do, they do it and in return are allowed to stay. glamorous.

I Apologize Barry i'm not trying to hijack your post and i know that "Iffy" is just a voice in a crowd that doesn't count. we're completely off subject,

Charisma has a lot to do with it, too: Sadly, Harper vs Dion seemed more The Office than The West Wing.

I hear what you're saying about the USA love-fest, though. Abroad, I found that people tended to like (or at least be curious about) the US, whereas during the past 7 years, my accent brought mostly scowls.

A real Barry Artiste Opinion, good to read. Canada had a leadership in Renewable energy technology  Ballard fuel cells, Hydrogen and so on. The reality show today, when I met with the Canadian delegate on the World power conference, she could not speak out for renewables, the new government does not want. That's how Canada is losing competitive advantage because of local laziness. Look at Abu Dhabi also a Petrol country now investing $8bn in Renewable energy, BP tops with $2bn for a Hydrogen production plant. That could have been Canada with all the Hydro power to Hydrogen power. 1985 the world had decided for Canada Hydrogen, now technology goes Abu dhabi and South Corea.

Unfortunately what you say is true, though Ballard initially had support from Japan, interest waned when new solutions may not have turned as viable as once thought, perhaps even impatient investors may have wanted a quicker return on investment, who knows, bottom line, we failed.

Really thought-provoking Barry - I never thought about it like that, but this is so true!

Thanks for the comments Amy, unfortunately hypocrisy rules when it comes to Canadians, when Harper would always state "God Bless Canada" after his speeches and on TV, the lefties and Politically Correct got their knickers in a twist spouting to the media that Canada must separate Church from State, and that Harpers Christian Values have no place in our modern diverse, upbeat Multicultural society, as Harpers words of God Bless Canada are an affront to non christian groups,(Funny though, seems Non Christian Groups had no problem with it)  and Harper should desist from spouting Christian Values, yet when Obama stated the exact same thing yesterday God Bless America, Lefty Canadians, including the media types in Canada moistened their undergarments and heaped praise on Obama, with nary a word of desist, separate Church and State or Obama is an affront to non christians as they did with Harper.  In fact the news was full of Obamarama and the Politically Correct crowd crowing about He has a Dream and Joy O Bliss and other such nonsense as the Lefties tripped over themselves gushing and ooing.  Makes you want to take a baseball bat and slap em upside the head.  Thus this is Canada the land of Hypocrisy!  One can be certain Obama thinks himself a Man first, and Black is most likely farther down his list of what he thinks of himself. Obama was voted in cause of his intelligence, blackness I would like to think played a more minor role, but listening to the Lefties it is like "We put em there!" Cause we are so progressive, oh give me a break.

An observation about why he was elected, even from one knowledgable, from a 'foreigner'.
Ah, Barry, if only it were so.
the shenanigans started with the caucuses, and donations with no verifications, .... revenge for the stolen republican elections?
Thrill up the leg, is just so apt. Where did that come from?

HA! of course 45 million dollars from a few rich corporates who paid for the entire inauguration yesterdays party helps too, when you have your best Corporate buds, Obama's private corporate donations ( I think there were 5 corporates who footed the bill for this shindig)  were only a couple of million dollars more than Bushes, so one can be certain payback will be a Beeyach! As our scandal plagued Brian Mulroney Canadas ex Prime Minister once stated, there is no Whore like an old Whore, cause ya gotta dance with the one ya brung.

i turn on the radio and all i hear is this " first black president"..."black" ..."black"... "black" its pretty sad  when one is defining a person that it should be the colour of their skin. but maybe some people need to hear it and say it just so they can keep their perspective of colour. which really their should be none, we're all people, made up of mitochondria's and epithelial cells, its just that some have more melanin than others.

Couldn't have said it better myself Marcel. Bang on!  One would think if Canada had a Black Prime Minister, most would not bat an eye, Big Deal Eh! We have a black Governor General, and a Female to boot, as well as a few Black ministers as well, Some dwell on it till the cows come home. We have an Asian Police Chief in Vangroovy, I do not think anyone cares, as long as Jim Chu does the job he was hired to do.

One thing though that I admire about Obama, is he made it perfectly clear in almost every speech he makes and makes it Crystal clear to the American Voter, "We" (Not Obama by himself mind you) all have to pull to together, we are all in this together to make America Great Again Economically, somehow in the coming months, Americans may forget his constant words WE, as many in interviews said Obama (alone) will clear the way and bring America on Course again.  That to me says the American Voter is not listening, Obama said WE!   Many like in Canada want FOR FREE, forgeting that it is the taxpayer who must pay for it, something many I feel ,especially the freeloading Left who always want someone else to pay, they (The Left) like to keep their stuff and hate to part with it in my view, our much hated Carbon Tax is one example when they including the Left wanted the Government to do something about the Environment as once again they were Bandwagon hopping on the Al Gore Hybrid Train.  The government surprisingly listened and implemented a 2 cent carbon tax on gas, well the BC Population Blew a Gasket and Freaked, So you see Hypocrisy Rules, when they find out they want FOR FREE and are upset The FOR FREE FAIRY is nowhere to be found.

I know Obama will be making some hard choices the Left and Right in the US are ill prepared to pay for.

Canada should count itself lucky, we are only half a trillion in debt with a trade surplus, Canadians owe around 13 grand each on the half trillion debt, yet the US Taxpayers saddled with a Trade Deficit and approaching close to 11 trillion dollars in National debt, taypayers in the US each stand to owe close to 80 thousand dollars each according to USA Today in June 2008, though I think about 40-50 grand maybe more realistic.

If China , which holds half a trillion dollars of US Bonds  and Saudi Arabia (I think 1 trillion dollars) decides to cash those US Bonds in as well, the US will be in for a world of hurt. Why Americans did not invest in their country and buy US Bonds, I do not know, though recent scandals the stock market, hedge funds and banking maybe a clue, when many of these crooks got away scot free or spent little time in jail.

The US population is aging and will need social services more than ever in the next 4 years, someone has to pay for it, will the Government? US citizens are the Government or a big shareholder money wise.  The For Free Fairy doesn't exist, unless you count your credit, which many rely on, as well as lottery tickets for their freedom 55 .

In ending my diatribe here on Now Public, It is Time to wake up "US and Canada" and get with the program, cause countries we help out financially dont give a diddlers damn about us.

Time for us as a North American (Canada and USA) people to care for Number 1, if there is some left over we will share it, until then the gravy train has to come to an end.

That includes immigration, until every citizen has a decent standard of living, no more homeless, we can ill afford more mouths to feed and care for from other shores, we also cannot afford to fight others battles on their shores, and become the World's Police Force, as well as give billions in Aid.

Countries need to fend for themselves and work out their differences, When we help, they (Other countries) hate us, when we do not act they (Other countries) Hate us, as far as I am concerned enough is enough!  We got our own problems, so Deal with it!

Harsh Reality, but it is you the people who have to foot the bill,. a bill we cannot afford at this time, when our own are doing without and some dying because we choose to assist others from other countries and not our own. So until all debts are cleared in both our countries, we are looking out for Number 1 !

Anyways Dinner is on, gotta eat, back later.

I have hope for the new president. That is all. I refuse to fall under the bandwagon of Obamamania... crushing my own critical thinking in the process.

Some people don't seem to understand this. Yes, it is excitiing to have such promises made, but as Obama has said himself, it is the will of the people that will make positive change. The president is there simply to listen and implement.

It'll be interesting to see how Obama's first international visit goes when he come to Canada on February 19th.  On behalf of Canadian Tourism Commission we shot some video of Canadians from Ottawa welcoming President Obama.

Welcome to Ottawa President Obama

What Should Obama Do in Ottawa?

What Should Obama Know about Canada?

There was a street poll among Canadians who stated they preferred Obama over our Prime Minister Harper to run our country.  Sort of premature I would think, but speaks volumes of Canadians who vote on style instead of substance, the man just took the position and has not really made concrete changes and put them into effect yet.  Hence why we have splintered politicial parties as Canadians sometimes are like a cross between sheep and lemmings, willing to follow anyone on style even if it means their own demise.  Once Canadians reach a precipe, then and only then do they show their displeasure at the elected leader they previously fawned over.

It shows Canada and the US acceptance of anyone but Bush to run both our countries in leadership.  I think this poll should have been conducted in a year to really see what Obama does for both our countries.
