Canary Fighting Ring Busted

A canary fighting ring was busted on Sunday in Shelton, CT. Over 150 canaries and finches were rescued. Also seized were $8000 in cash and a bunch of cages which would be connected to goad the birds into fighting.
 
Acting on a search warrant, police searched a house on Ripton Road in Shelton, and subsequently arrested nineteen people have been arrested for animal cruelty and illegal gambling:

  • Waldiney Almeida, 29, of Holbrook, MA.
  • Auder Gontijo, 43, of Marlborough, MA.
  • Celco Soares, 33, of Marlborough, MA.
  • Geraldo Teixeira, 43, of Kearny, NJ.
  • Lucas Dos Santos, 25, of Newark, NJ.
  • Odeci Dos Santos, 43, of Newark, NJ.
  • Marcos Teles, 36, of Newark, NJ.

  • I had no idea that canary fighting even existed. I didn't think that they were truculent by nature, but would any birds fight over artificially-restricted territory?
