GOP Congressman Eric Cantor charged by journalists with deliberately misleading media report

Richmond Police Investigate Cantor Building Vandalism

Cantor's tale about a bullet which struck his office at the Reagen Building on East Main in Richmond, VA has been assigned to an investigative officer at the Richmond Police Department.

It was reported that a bullet struck the first floor office window at around one a.m. on Tuesday, March 23.

The building, which houses of the office of GOP Congressman Eric Cantor, among other tenants,  was unoccupied and closed at the time of the alleged incident.   It has been suggested by various media outlets that Cantor exaggerated the tale deliberately in order to make Democratic targets seem less singled out by angry conservatives and tea baggers . Police say the shot was fired skyward in a random fashion, and was in no way aimed toward the office. There are no suspects.

A Richmond Police detective has been assigned to the case.  The initial phase of the investigation would appear to reveal that  a bullet was fired into the air,  skyward and randomly,   and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window.

The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman.

The Richmond Police Department is sharing information about the incident with appropriate law enforcement agencies.

At this time there are no suspects.

The Richmond Police Department released the following statement Thursday, along with this incident report:
