Canucks’ Wins are too Luongo and Sedins Dependent
Our Waiting for Stanley blogger surmises that there are two things that make the Canucks successful. Roberto Luongo is one of them. The other is that “when the Sedins score, the Canucks win, like last night [against the Thrashers]. When they don't, we lose.” These things are concerns in that Luongo and the Sedins are bound to have an off day like any other human beings. “The biggest glaring solution here to solve both problems is secondary scoring.” We’re not going to cut it with a 2 goal per night average.
Our blogger asks if Taylor Pyatt, Matt Cooke, Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows or the rest could “chip in a little more once in a while?” To give us some perspective, the post notes that “Brendan Morrison has been out of action for about 23 games and he is still 6th in team scoring with 20 points in 30 games.” Peter Forsberg would be a good fit for Vancouver. “He makes players around him produce more. A Sedin-Pyatt line followed by a Forsberg-Naslund-whoever line would be a great 1-2 punch.” It’s the kind of “threat” the Canucks need “in order to have any success in the playoffs.”
City of North Vancouver Defends its Heritage Preservation Plan
North Vancouver Politics.com reports that the city “has launched a campaign” to do some damage-control that resulted “from Council's decision to approve demolition or ‘de-construction’ of three historic landmarks at the foot of Lonsdale.” The City wants residents to know that “while not all of the buildings could be preserved as part of the National Maritime Centre (NMC) concept, the City remains committed to the retention of a significant shipyard heritage precinct.”
Some historic items will be preserved. There are many “significant heritage artifacts” retained to enhance the character of the former shipyard site as it is developed and the City says they have “approved Design Guidelines for future site construction.” Some of the heritage items that the city will retain include the Coppersmith Shop, the Pipe Shop, Restoration of the Burrard Dry Dock Pier, Restoration of the St. Roch Dock, Retention of two large Burrard Dry Dock Colby Cranes, and more. The “National Maritime Centre proposal would tell our local shipbuilding story as part of the exhibits… [and] the NMC plans to create and promote a shipyard historic precinct.” The entire list is available in the post.
Monica Lee’s Commercial-Drive Influenced CD Released at The Libra Room
Over at Commercial Drive Live, Steven R. Duncan announces local jazz delight Monica Lee’s CD Release Party on February 21. Duncan writes that he’s “very excited by the arrival of this CD,” having had the fortunate opportunity to work with Monica on occasion when he “booked a couple of corporate events.” He calls her “voice, style and range of music… delightful.”
The post notes that the CD is a great representation of Commercial Drive, having been recorded at The Libra Room, where the Monica Lee Band “has been playing for 2 years on Thursdays.” Backed by Jesse Waldman, currently artist-in-residence at Lime, and Mark L'esparance, “Lee is definitely a musical force to be reckoned with.” She’s even got a “Caribbean- influenced Drive anthem called “Down on the Drive.” The CD contains 10 live tracks, three ipod ready quicktime movies, and the design was done by Chris Bizzocchi.
