Capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, brought under Russian control
Russian forces brought have brought under their control Tskhinvali, the capital of Georgia's South Ossetia region, after unrelenting attacks and heavy bombardment. Death toll has been put at 2,000, though the number of bodies recovered is still below 150.
There have been accusations by Russia that Georgia shelled the city and killed some of its "peace keepers". Georgia, in the meanwhile has charged Russia with carrying out massive aerial attacks deep inside Georgian territory employing as many as 50 fighter jets.
The Georgian interior ministry has said that the Russian planes bombed a military base and an air traffic control center in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.
Russia, emboldened by its quick success, has warned Georgia that if it failed to disarm its fighters Russian forces will enter Georgian territory.
Britain has said that there is "widespread concern about the escalating violence in Georgia". David Miliband, the British Foreign Secretary, condemned Russian military attacks on Georgia and said that he had spoken with "international colleagues" about the issue early on Monday.
