The Georgian interior ministry has said that the Russian planes bombed a military base and an air traffic control center in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.

Russia, emboldened by its quick success, has warned Georgia that if it failed to disarm its fighters Russian forces will enter Georgian territory.

Britain has said that there is "widespread concern about the escalating violence in Georgia". David Miliband, the British Foreign Secretary, condemned Russian military attacks on Georgia and said that he had spoken with "international colleagues" about the issue early on Monday.
