Car Free Day 2009: Celebrations Around The World
September 22 is the official Car Free Day around the world -- it is a day when motorists are encouraged to give up driving for at least one day and walk, bike or use other "green" modes of transportation instead. The goal is to reduce air pollution directly, but also raise awareness among motorists of the effect of cars on the environment. The day was initiated in the 90's by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) in Britain, but really took off internationally in 2000. This year, over fifteen hundred cities around the globe participated, among them --
Toronto, Canada (first city in North American to take part in the Day)
Vancouver, Canada
Sofia, Bulgaria (to conduct a bike census in the capital)
Bangkok, Thailand
Moscow, Russia (senior Moscow officials commuted to work on public transport)
Washington, USA
Seoul, South Korea
Hohhot, China
London, UK (mayor Boris Johnson also joined)
Glasgow, UK
A spokesperson for the ETA said: “The number of cars and urban traffic is constantly increasing, and the associated noise, air pollution and stress is eroding the quality of life of urban dwellers. Car Free Day focuses on highlighting alternatives to car travel, the rights of pedestrians and cyclists, and the need for more and better public transport.”
The idea of the Car Free Day resonates with the idea of the Earth Hour held on March 28 in 2009. Eighty-eight countries and four thousand cities participated in the Earth Hour this year.

this electric scooter is one step - - - - right. it is a good step fowards to another way of transportation as far as we did. perhaps this one is not as perfect as you like, but this development gives us hope.
IMHO the looks are great.
