A three-year-old Mississauga boy was seriously injured after he left his home in the middle of the night and was struck by a car, police say.

It's believed the boy left through the front door of his family's townhouse on Britannia Road near Glen Erin Road around 1 a.m. Wednesday, while his parents slept.

Police said he put on his father's running shoes, squeezed through a break in the fence and wandered onto the road.

The boy has suffered a broken leg and facial injuries. The condition remains critical but stable in the Hospital for the Sick Children.

The boy was airlifted to the Hospital For Sick Children and remains in critical, but stable condition.

His grandfather told 680News that his grandson suffered a broken leg and some facial injuries.

Parent did not know that the boy was missing until they were told by police.

Police canvassed the neighbourhood in an effort to find the boy's caregivers. The child's parents didn't realize he was missing until they were told by police.
The boy's parents don't know how or why their son wandered out of the home.

Police had arrested a 48-year-old Mississauga man with the help of a witness, but no charges were layed formally.

The driver of the car sped away from the scene but police were able to arrest a suspect a short distance away with the help of witnesses.
A 48-year-old Mississauga man was later arrested, but has not been formally charged in the incident, Peel Regional Police said.

They were sleeping. When u put your child to put you dont expect them to wake up in the middle of the night and sneak out the front door.
