Carla Bruni caught up in backlash over minister's 'sex tourism'
Nicolas Sarkozy's presidency – and especially his relationship with his conservative followers and voters – has been seriously undermined by the "sexual tourism" scandal which has engulfed his Culture Minister, according to centre-right politicians.
I have no sympathy for Nicolas Sarkozy – I think he’s self-serving and corrupt – so none of this piece is about me lamenting the possible role that his wife, Carla Bruni, has in his presidency.
Bruni has been accused of bringing a set of ‘bo-bo’ values to the Presidency since her marriage which may have excused (encouraged?) the recent under-age sex scandal involving France’s culture minister, Frédéric Mitterrand.
Some centre-right parliamentarians blame the scandal on what they call the "bo-bo [bourgeois bohemian] values" brought to the Elysée Palace by the President's wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.…
Mr Mitterrand, 63, France's first openly gay cabinet minister, went on prime-time television on Thursday to deny that he had paid to have sex with under-age boys or defended "sexual tourism".
If this is the case, and there is only anecdotal evidence to suggest that it is, then perhaps the French President needs to revisit his choices and the values that are central to a presidency. But most of all, he needs to address the actions of his culture minister and ascertain if he has indeed engaged in illegal activity of any sort. My feeling? Our Mr. Sarkozy is not going to be in a hurry to do any of that. It’s just not his style…
