Carte Goodwin will fill the late Robert Byrd's seat in the Senate until a special election is held. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin is expected to make the announcement today.

Carte Goodwin, former chief counsel to the governor from 2005 through 2009 and part of the Goodwin & Goodwin family-run law firm, will serve as Senator in a temporary capacity. Goodwin is a specialist in intellectual-property law, and served as Chairman of the West Virginia School Building Authority and the Governor's Advisory Committee on Judicial Nominations.

When the special election takes place, which may be as early as November, Manchin himself may compete for Byrd's seat.

A date for a special election still needs to be set, but it could occur as early November 2. Manchin, himself, has expressed interest in running for the seat.

It's the West Virginia Law Firm Mafia.

Let me add, Manchin was from the distinguished firm of Manchin and Manchin.
