Cash For Appliances: Buy Energy Star Appliances And Get Cash Back
The US Federal Government's Cash for Appliances program is back this year. The nation-wide rebate program for appliances was extremely popular last year, with people trading in old appliances in order to upgrade to newer and more efficient Energy Star appliances. People who buy new Eerngy Star appliances get to send in for a mail in rebate. The program runs by stimulus funding, with $300 million allocated to the 2009 program.
Most US States will be offering the Cash for Appliances program by March and April of 2010. A few States such as Michigan and Oregon are already offering the appliance upgrades, with New York and Georgia set to join in today. Rebates in the Cash for Appliances program range from $50-$250 depending on the appliance.
With many appliances you'll often see manufacturer rebates or retail promotions–these you can usually take on top of the new appliance rebate. Same with the federal energy efficiency tax credit, in effect through this year, which gives a 30% credit up to $1,500 for the purchase of certain heating, cooling and ventilation appliances, among other things.
Appliances that qualify in the Cash for Appliances program include: clothes washers, boilers, freezers, central air conditioners, heat pumps, refrigerators, dish washers, water heaters, and air conditioners. People are advised to check with their State's list of approved appliances, however, before purchasing for the rebate.
Individuals can participate in the Cash for Appliances program by printing off forms and sending them in with proof of purchase. Rebates for this program are most often in the form of a prepaid card or check. New York will be launching its popular "Great Appliance Swap Out" today. More information can be found on energysavers.gov.

Be sure to check with your local utility before you recycle your appliances. Many give cash for recycling refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners. Ours will come pick up the appliance, and present you with a check. Get $ for recycling, the state rebate, AND you might even be able to get rebates from your utility. Maximize your purchasing power!
