Catholic families seek housing transfers

Four catholic families, including a deaf and wheelchair bound widow, are seeking emergency transfers from their homes in the Carrick Hill area of north Belfast.

It comes in the wake of what they say are repeated sectarian attacks from missile throwers.

Catherine McMahon, who is 87, says she has been in the firing line of such attacks in her Stanhope Street home for years. But she feels more vulnerable for the past 3 months since the death of her husband.

Her daughter Peggy McMahon says she fears for her mother`s safety.

She said: “We’re afraid to leave her on her own. We tell her not to come out.”

The Oaklee Housing Association say there have been 20 attacks in the past year.

They say they are in discussions with the housing executive the police, the NIO and local residents to try and eradicate the problem.
